sports V irgin ...offense stroin By MARK LEARY Sports FAr Many people feel Saturday's game against the Virginia M Cavaliers will be a breeze for Carolina and that the Gamecocks should have an automatic 4-1 record going into next Saturday's game with the University of Mississippi Rebels. "We can't look back on anybody we have defeated and think we can beat the next team on the schedule," Gamecock coach Jim Carlen said. Thus, Carlen dispelling the idea that the Gamecocks would be looking ahead or remembering their upset victory over Baylor. "You better play as hard as you can ever, weekand hope you can come out on top every week," he said. Without a doubt the two quarterbacks will be the men to watch in Saturday's contest. Both Jeff Grantz and Scott Gardner are All-America candidates and both Carlen and Virginia coach Sonny Randle consider their quarterbacks to be the beut in the country. Cooper slips to s Outlaw 14 From Staff Reports It has happened. There were only faint rum lings last week, like the distant warning cry of a rampaging war ape. But after a glistening 17-3 record in the weekend's football picks, Bill Outlaw has replaced the heralded Ray Cooper as the staff's new king pmn. Outlaw, a picture of modesty, declared, "All those other turkeys mights as well quit now. I'm on top to stay." Outlaw's 45-11 record puts him one game up on'.the dethroned Cooper. "I don't like being in second place," Cooper grumbled. "Next week I will regain my top seat. Outlaw is the only true turkey on the staff," he added. If their is any better quarterback in the nation, I would like to see him play," Carlen said. Randle also is high on his quarterback, saying"I'll take any other quarterback in college football and we will talk about what they can do and what they can't do, and Scott will stand head and shoulders above all of them." Carlen also likes Gardner, "Gardner is a superlative quarterback. He is the kind of youngster that can hurt you if you give him the chance." Both qarterbacks have pressive statistics in their first four games. Gardner has completed 52 of 113 passes for 571 yards and three touchdowns while Grantz has completed 40 of 69 passes for 559 yards and three touchdowns. Virginia has other offensive standouts besides Gardner. The Cavalier's leading runner is tailback Billy Copeland with 361 yards on 63 runs for a 5.7 average. Fullback Dave Sloan has rushed for 287 yards for a econd place 3ads progni "It feels much better now," said Bill Pratt, Gamecock editor who was tied for the last spot a week ago. "It also shows the incompetence of the sports staff. We've had Assistant Sports Editor George Morris living in the cellar, and now it's J. Mark Leary. I'll keep rising week by week," he continued, " and by the end of the year, I should be on top." Pratt's 39-17 record ties him with staffer Billy Cox, who needs to stick to bubblegum coverage rather than prognostication. At any rate, they stand two games above the floundering Mi. Leary. "I can go nowhere but up," Leary said after his 12-8 slide. "All you people get your laughs right now, because at the end of the season I'll be on top. Ac - cording to some people, my reputation was ruined by my earlier showing." But according to Morris, Leary's demise was inevitable.
