While rising enrollment has caused an increase in construction on
campus, workmen have partially completed the demolition of the old
.Booker T. Washington High School.
Buildings rise
with enrollment
By CATHERINE THRIFT
Gamecock Staff Writer
Increased enrollment has been cited by officials for the construction
underway at several sites on campus, as some colleges have outgrown
their present facilities.
Gil Perry, of Campus Planning, said that most of the projects were
begun last year, with the exception of the additions to the Thomas
Cooper Library, which has been under construction for three years.
"THE LIBRARY is more or less finished now," Perry said. "We're
moving book stacks and technical furniture in and setting it up. We'll
move the books in during the Christmas holidays and we hope it will be
open by the spring semester."
The library, located behind the Physical Sciences Center, at the
corner of Sumter and Devine Streets, is being rebuilt at a cost of ap
proximately $6.8-million to the University.
The Biological Science Center is also being expanded to include new
biology and pharmacy buildings.
"THE COLLEGE of Biology has outgrown its existing location,"
Perry said. "I assume the medical college will take over the old biology
complex."
Construction of the biology building will cost $4.6-million, and the
construction costs of the pharmacy building, $3.5-million, will be par
tially offset by a $2.3-million grant from the Department of Health,
Education and Welfare.
The pharmacy building is in the planning stages, but Perry said he
hopes construction will begin in February or March of next year.
The biology building is expected to be completed in January, 1976.
ANOTHER EXPANSION program is at the Russell House. The ad
dition to the existing student center will house a ballroom, student
government offices and a bookstore.
The Russell House Theater, located in the area under construction.
will have a new entrance.
"We hope to be moving into the Russell House by May of next year,"
said Perry. The expansion is being made at a cost of $3.7-million to the
University.
A new social sciences center, Gambrell Hall, is being built at the
corner of Henderson and College Streets, at a cost of $4.2-million. 'The
center is named for E. Smythe Gambrell, an Atlanta attorney and USC
graduate, who gave $1-million toward its construction.
Expansion will not be completed when these projects are finished,
according to Perry. A parking garage on Pendleton Street is going up
now and a cultural-center complex will be built on the corner of Pen
dieton and Henderson Streets.
Expansion is necessary result of the University's growth, Perry said.
