Columbia City Council Aug. 20 approved several proposals concerning
Green Street. Since that action. several viewpoints have been voiced
about what should actually be done.
Steve Hill. president of the Student Government Association (SGA)
and Harold Brunton. USC vice president of operations. had proposed the
widening of Green Street by 10 feet on each side, the building of a 20-foot
wide median on the street. the closing of parking on the street and the
channeling of all traffic to the west side of Longstreet Theatre.
Hill said their proposal also included provisions for stop signs on the
street and a lowered speed limit of 15 miles per hour. He said council
had not approved these provisions. but had approved the others.
There has been some opposition to the proposal of Hill and Brunton by
the Senate Residence Life Committee Chairman Dave Wilsford and
Preston president Danny Sansbury. One of the objections is to the plans
for a wrought iron fence to be placed in the median.
"It would be nicer and more 'wholesome' if we had an open mall
where people could go freely." said Wilsford. He said the two proposed
spaces in the fence would be very constricting to pedestrians. Planting
shrubbery would be a better plan, he said. One of the reasons for
placing a fence in the median is to protect the grass there. Wilsford
feels the area does not need grass because it is "so hard to take care of."
Instead, he said, there should be a patio with trees there.
"I can see the reasons for the fence," said Sansbury. "The good
points of it are that the safety of pedestrians and automobile traffic is
better controlled, and the appeaarance would be more attractive and
it*l look more like a college street."

Despite the good points, he wants the area left alone. "I fail to see the
purpose. All the people must cross at one place and this is an in
convenience."
Another objection is the construction of the median and widening of
the street would disturb the residents in the Preston and Woodrow
areas. Hill said the construction would not begin until the summer and
would be finished by fall, along with Russell House and Long treet
Theatre. "If they won't start until May, that's okay. If not tha 's not
satisfactory," said Wilsford.
Sansbury said the idea of starting in May is a good one, but there is no
guarantee the project will be finished before fall. He also opposed the
closing of parking on the street, saying people in the quad and com
muter students depend on these spaces.
Preston and Woodrow dorms have had a petition circulated within
them concerning the Green Street proposals. The petition says that the
undersigned voice opposition to present or future plans to change Green
Street between Bull and Sumter streets. In effect, said Sansbury, the
petition says if Green Street cannot be closed, leave it alone. City
council has said it will entertain no more proposals to close the street,
according to Sansbury.
At a meeting Friday of the Student-Trustee Liaison Committee,
Brunton said of the students opposing the plans, "If they took this action
they would lose all credibility, possibly of the trustees and definitely
with the Columbia City Council."
Brunton met last week with Hill, vice president of student affairs Bill >
Campbell and the group from Preston and Woodrow. He said if the
group obtained a petition, he would send it to the trustees.
Hill plans to set up a committee of six to eight people from all areas of
campus and possibly off-campus students to study the situation. ... Green Streci dilemma.
