Board approves
2nd coed dorm
By DUNCAN MANSFIELD
Gamecock Staff Writer
The USC Board of Trustees endorsed proposals at their Saturday
meeting that will effect the housing status of Columbia Hall, and
possibly the whole system of financing higher education in the state.
By a 10 to 3 vote, the Board agreed to convert Columbia Hall into a
male-female dorm, similar to Bates West, "not before the 1976-77
academic year."
TIE COLUMBIA Hall recommendation originated in the Student
Trustee Liaison Committee, and was based on "the excellent track
record" shown by Bates West residents during the past year. The
committee noted that property damage and the event of disciplinary
cases at Bates West have been negligible.
"The women (of Columbia Hall) are in favor of this (the housing
change) already," SGA President Steve Hill said in the proposals
defense. The Trustees did not set a specific date for the change at
Columbia Hall, saying only that the plan would become "effective
whenever the administration is ready."
