Fraternity move
long-range goal
BY DUNCAN MANSFIELD
Gamecock Staff Writer
While the long-range goal of USC's fraternities is to
move out of their present facilities in the McBryde
Quadrangle, it will be at least a year before even the
largest chapters can initiate a fund-raising program for
the cost of new housing, according to Tony Lowman,
president of the Inter-Fraternity Council. (IFC)
Under a plan approved by the USC Board of Trustees
Jan. 25, the University will provide land between Bates
House and Roost for individual fraternity houses,
costing approximately $200,000 each. Financing
arrangements for each new house-will be 25 per cent
down and 30-year, 6 per cent mortgage.
Mike Compton, advisor to USC fraternities and
sororities, said the new fraternity houses will probably
resemble an apartment complex, which the University
will be able to use if a fraternity defaults on its
payments.
The problem for the individual fraternity that wants a
new house is to raise the $50,000 down payment. Comp
ton said this will probably require a 5-to 10-year fund
raising program.
While the fraternities desire to eventually move out of
McBryde, Compton describes their present housing as
"a good deal because it is close and cheap." Former
IFC president Mike Runager said in February the
physical condition of McBryde was near the point of
"delapidation."
Since that time, maintenance of the buildings has
considerably improved, according to Lowman. The
fraternities have been doing some of the painting and
repairing themselves, for which the housing office gives
the fraternities a 10 per cent rebate on their housing fee.
Compton noted that membership is on the upswing on
the national level and this trend would be seen inthe next
few years at . USC. A number of national fraternities
are interested in establishing local chapters at USC.
Compton expects the new fraternities to possibly be the
first groups to build the new houses if they want to be
located on campus.
Only one fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, has a house that
is not in McBryde. The chapter is leasing a building on
Whaley Street.
