Sialuda River rapids near
Columbia Monday afternoon.
William J. Phillips, a junior from
Charleston, was swimming across
the river with a companion, Robert
Burton, when Phillips disap
peared, according to Lexington
County Assistant Harvey J.
Harmon.
Phillip's body was found
Tuesday afternoon.
Harmon said the river looked
calm but has rocks, currents and
holes below the surface. Phillips
may have fallen into a deep hole,
he said.
One or two persons have
drowned in the area this year,
Harmon added.
