on the world's ass.
During my three years here
there has been a constant barrage
of left-wing mumbo-jumbo ac
companied by political cartoons
that were almost always opposed
to a conservative argument or
endorsing a liberal one. The
political endorsements with
regards to national and statewide
candidates could very well have
been written in the editorial offices
of the New York Times. George
McGovern, the diarrhea of the
Democratic party, was endorsed
as follows: "McGovern is an
unknown quantity, but we would
like him to have a chance to show
what he can do. Perhaps he will
rise to the occasion." Take note of
the words unknown quantity,
chance and perhaps. It sounds
more like an endorsement of a gin
rummy player than a presidential
candidate for U.S. Senator was
also endorsed in 1972 with little
mention of the outstanding ac
complishments of what his op
ponent, U.S. Senator Strom
Thurmond has done for South
Carolina. However, the following
week's paper contained a quote
from Zeigler's news secretary that
"the electorate don't have the in
telligence to vote for him." In 1974
Charles "Pug" Ravenel caused
The Gamecock to achieve its
greatest journalistic orgasm.
Nevertheless, conservatives were
victorious in November.
Throughout the semester this
column will present the other side
of the coin in regards to national
political questions and candidates.
Views will be expressed on
politicians ranging from Ronald
Reagan to Ted Kennedy and
subjects such as capital punish
ment and public employee strikes.
The title of this column, Right
On, was affectionately selected for
two reasons. First, there is a
paradoxical message in the ex
pression which is self-evident. The
Dbvious combination of an
ideological word connotating a
certain direction of political
thought with a phrase associated
with the campus unrest and
political activism of the 1960's a la
Rubin, Hoffman, Rudd and
company.
Secondly, the term "right on"
has become a mainstay in the
vocabulary of one of Hollywood's
self-proclaimed "hip-stars." This
persdn is known to just about
anyone who appears on his
television show as the greatest
entertainer in the world. To most
rf us he is known as Sammy Davis
Jr., and almost anyone who can
hug Richard Nixon and kiss Archie
Bunker can't be all that bad.
