New Pool Regulations Column By Sports Editor Billy Baker Several years ago this writer remembered Paul Dietzel, former head football coach and athletic director, saying that he had been to see the ultra modern pool at Indiana, a university of Mark Spitz fame, and that he wanted the pool at USC to be an improvement on that one. The Natatorium consists of two pools actually. One is strictly for diving and is between 12 and 14 feet deep. It is complete with a concrete diving platform five meters above the water. There are two high diving boards and two regular diving boards in the diving area. There is a special ob servation room where students, with permission, may go to view people from under the water. It is ideal for filming swimmers. The larger pool is a 10 lane wide picture of per fection in swimming pool architec ture. It begins on the shallow end at 4'3" and is 7'3" at its deepest point. The pool is complete with a patio that overlooks a small creek. Two big windows that can be opened should provide a good breeze during the middle of the day when the pool will be available for student use. Pool Rules Seem Outdated There are several rules that accompany the opening of the pool that will present trouble for pool officials in the future. In a press release from Cooper's office it states that "swim suits which are cut extremely high at the hips or low at the waist are out of place in the co-educational swimming program and the wearer will not be admitted to the pool." I think it is going to be interesting to see how one can enforce this rule without discrimination to a certain extent. I don't know what a good lawyer could do w/ith a Case like that. Imagine a female who wears a bikini before thousands at Myrtle SPORTS New Coach Named BY BILLY BAKER Sports Editor Greg Blatt, an assistant basketball coach at the College of Charleston and former member of the 1967 USC freshman team has been named an assistant basketball coach at Carolina. Associate head basketball coach Donnie Walsh said that Blatt was hifed to fill the position of Bobby Cremins who was named the head basketball coach at Ap plachian St. this past spring. Blatt is a Barnwell High School graduate and is the grandson of Sol Blatt, former state legislator . "We are very happy to have him on our staff," Walsh said. "We don't assign anyone specific duties but his em phasis will be on recruiting duties." Blatt coached at Fort Johnson High in Charleston before joining the staff at the College of Charleston in 1972. A pool that all students will have to help pay for may be privy to only a few students. It is not that ridiculous that one should be recommended to wear swim ming suits issued by the natatorium officials, but because most of us already have swim suits it seems logical tiat the University is trying to tell us what kind of swim suit we must wear at the pool. The recession may have caused a few people to be unable to purchase swim suits but for the most part people have bought what they want to swim in already. Why tell them that their selection of swim wear is not with swimming pool regulations. It is understandable that men may not wear cut-off jeans because of the lint and dye that is easily transmitted into the water. Why Spoil A Good Thing It is so darn foolish that the university spends $2.6 million building the poo and other facilities and then they seem so outdted in their rules. It is like a person that lives in a damp dirty house for twenty years while.they save money for the future. As soon as this person moves into their dream house all kinds of rules are made. The house dog of the past 10 years suddenly is relegated to the backyard and all shoes are removed at the front door. The living room is only to be used during special occasions. This reporter says that the new pool should be "lived in" more than the present rules called for. It is direct infringement upon one's constitutional rights to deny access to a university pool because of a dumb rule. With rules like this it is a wonder that males and females are allowed to swim together. All this sounds like a meeting between our Board of Trustees. By the way, the average age of a USC Board of Trustee member is somewhere in the 60's compared to 20 for the average USC student. That tells you something about the generation gap. Regardless, don't let these foolish rules scare you away from the pool. Go over there Friday at 11:30 a.m. for a dip. If you think your constitutional rights have been violated there are plenty of lawyers around town who are willing to go to bat for you. Don't forget to bring a quarter for the mandatory locker fee.
