The number of students working
on work study at USC should in
crease during the '75-'76 school
term despite the University's
funding predicament, according to
the USC Financial* Aid Office.
An increase in federal funds of
$37,171 from last year's allotment
(making the University's total
federal allotment for work study
$634,171) should allow for more
students to join the program,
according to Martin McGirt,
director of Student Financial Aid.
80 per cent of the program's funds
come from federal funds and the
University gives the remaining 20
per cent in matching funds, McGirt
said.
Several departments contacted
by the Gamecock expressed
concern that work study might be
cut back because of recent budget
cutting measures enacted by the
administration. However, McGirt
said, "We anticipate no problems
with the University coming up with
the matching funds. We hope we
can have at least a slight increase
in the number of students on the
program and maybe we can
substantially increase if we get
supplementary funds."
There is a bill in Congress now
that if passed would provide
supplementary funds for work
study programs, McGirt said. If it
passes soon and is signed by the
president it may mean that a
bigger increase in students can be
handled this year, according to
McGirt.
"We have many departments
who want more work study
students and many students who
are qualified for the program but
haven't been able to get on it
because of a shortage of funds,"
McGirt said. Department
allocations for the new year
haven't been given out yet but
should be out shortly after a

The College of Business Ad
ministration is asking for four
more students in summer school
and about seven more for the fall
and spring semesters, John Herin,
assistant dean, said. "In, past
years we could go over our com
mitment for the year a little, but
apparently with money now tighter
the Financial Aid Office is having
to be stricter,". he said.
Ted Kone, assistant director of
the Alumni Association, said his
group has asked for two more work
study students to help with an
increasing workload. Since the
moratorium on hiring. of state
employes has gone into effect, they
couldn't hire any more regular
employes, Kone said. "We hope to
get more students to take up the
slack."
It was announced June 18 by the
administration that when the
minimum wage increases from $2
to $2.20 per hour this coming
January that work study students'
will not receive the increase.
Previously, students had been paid
minimum wage. At that time Sig
Huitt, director of Information
Services, said the University has
realized that it can no longer pay
minimum wage because of its tight
budget. As an educational in
stitution, the University is not
legally bound to pay minimum
wage to part time help.
"If funds were sufficient I would
want the increase, but under the
present economic conditions I
guess this is probably the most
practical approach to make,"
McGirt said.
