It happened Sunday night in Carolina Coliseum, with a special skit by the fun guys, the Columbia Police Department, who were kept busy at first, ex pelling nicotine criminals before setting out to end the dangerous threat posed by several frisbee throwing fans who were running amuck on the main floor. Anyway, once the frisbees had been rounded up, the show was ready to go on, and it did with the opening act of guitarist John Hammond who whipped up the audience with guitar, harps, and fast-paced blues. Next on stage, to the welcome of cheers was Georgia Rock 'n Roll band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Skynyrd was loud, but they don't huck around. Lead singer and lyricist Ronnie Van Zant had the crowd moving by the end of the first song, and he kept up the pace during the entire set, trucking out with some heavy rockers like Saturday Night Special, The Needle and the Spoon, ("I've seen a lot of people who thought they were cool - and Lord, I've seen a lot of fools.") and their most successful tune, Sweet Home Alabama. Good rock 'n roll. But it was Marshall Tucker that the audience had been waiting for.
