The Committee to Study the Reorganization of Food Services and the Cafeteria Committee have both filed preliminary reports which indicate student and ad ministrative dissatisfaction with the present operation of food services. The Cafeteria Committee, chaired by Barbara Ann Pope, assistant professor of social work, surveyed 319 cafeteria customers at all University dining facilities to find out student opinions on the service and quality of meals. The survey showed that rko respondents rated items on the questionnaire either excellent or poor. The Committee to Study the Reorganization of Food Services was formed in April and met twice weekly for a month to get background information on food services. Representatives from Auxiliary Services, ARA, the University Union and the Cafeteria Com mittee presented material and viewpoints at those meetings. In a report the committee issued, immediate and long-term recommendations for food services were stated. The justifications for losing operations is founded in part of providing service to students and staff. Food services is regulated by state law to operate on a break even basis. The report said, "This stipulation looms as a crucial factor in considering the reorganization of food services and must enter into any plans for changing the food service at the University." The first recommendation of the committee was that food services be placed under Student Affairs, which became effective Tuesday. Richard Wertz, dean for Residence Life and University Housing, said although his department is now in charge of food services, no action will be taken immediately until another investigation is made. SGA President Steve Hill said .he committee will bring in representatives of other food services to determine if another company can serve students better than ARA. He said he is dissatisfied with ARA's per formance. "They should be doing what students want," he said. Hill said he thinks ARA is doing an especially poor job in the Gamecock Room. Among the immediate recom mendations of the committee were: --delaying any plans to renovate the Gamecock Room until a complete study is done of the total food service operation. -that there be increased com munication between Director of Dining Services Don Hottel and Russell House Director Robert Todd. --that such functions as "special dinners" be expanded and held regularly. --the committee should be in volved in any contract renewal by the University with ARA. These and other recom mendations from the committee have been sent to the proper of ficials to act on them, according to Wertz. No action has yet been taken on them.
