Library Network
The USC library system is now
mnected with the Southeastern
'brary Network (SOLINET), a
)mputer service for cataloging
)oks in libraries throughout the
)utheast.
USC, a charter member in the
twork, can now use the computer
rminal to communicate with the
!ntral computer in Columbus,
hio. Through this computer, USC
braries have access to
bliographical data on more than
5 million books.
More than 100 libraries in the
>utheastern United States belong
SOLINET and through their
)operative cataloging, member
braries can obtain instant
italoging of their books from the
)mputer.
According to Kenneth E.
iombs, director of libraries at
SC, this, new technical
eakthrough is one of the major
velopments in library service in
tis part of the country.

time, staff and work space more
than offset the cost incurred.
When the system Is complete, the
libraries will be able to discontinue
the card catalog and use the
computer for the permanent
record of its holdings.
Flying Club
The USC Flying Club will hold a
meeting at 7:30 p.m. on June 25 in
Room 312 of the Russell House.
Any student interested in learning
how to fly or any student who
already has his license is welcome
to attend.
The club offers Right training in
a Cessna 150. The meeting will
consist of membership information
and a discussion of future club
activities. Anyone interested
should contact Robert Sumwalt at
782-8158 or Instructor Curt Elmore
at 776-6450.
Ombudsman
Allan M. Bfyan of Columbia has
been appointed student om
budsman at the University of South
Carolina by USC President
William H. Patterson. The ap
pointment is for the 1975-76 year.
Bryan, son of Mr. and Mrs.
James C. Bryan, is a liberal arts
major at USC. Two other student
ombudsmen were appointed. They
are Melziner Stover and Leon C.
Banks, both of Camden.
Research Scholarship
William S. Lowery of Camden
has been named the recipient of an
Allied Chemical Corporation
Summer Research Scholarship at
the University of South Carolina.
He is one of 20 high school students
from 13 counties in the Midlands
area to be selected.

Lowery will be working in the
area of chemistry research under
the.supervision of USC Prof. Dr. T.
A. Bryson.
The program is open to top
science students from the
Midlands area and is designed to
allow advanced students with
interests in physical and biological
sciences and engineering an op
portunity to study with outstanding
research professors at USC.
Lowery is a 1975 graduate of
Camden High School.
Special Training
A three-week summer training
program for teachers of deaf and
blind children is underway at USC.
The federally-funded program,
sponsored by the South Atlantic
Regional Center for Services for
Deaf-Blind Children, is designed
for teachers with no formal
training with deaf and blind
students, but who work with them
throughout the year.
More than 20 teachers from
Virginia,. Maryland, Washington
D.C., West Virginia, North and
South Carolina are attending the
workshop which combines
theoretical and practical ex
periences in working with han
dicapped children.
Under the direction of Dr.
Marvin Efron of the USC College of
Education, the teachers will be
instructed in such areas as basic
sign language, the nature of the
visually impaired and behavior
modification of the deaf-blind
student.
In addition to classroom work,
participants will be able to receive
practical experience during a day
long trip to the South Carolina
School for the Deaf and Blind
where they will work with students
at the school.
