A fourth quarter comeback at
tempt by the Garnet squad fell
short and the White team downed
the Garnet team 20-17 in the annual
Carolina spring football game at
Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday
night.
The Garnet team led by injured
quarterback Ron Bass passed its
way back into the game as Bass
connected with Randy Chastain on
a 20 yard touchdown strike to pull
the Garnet team within five points
of the White squad.
Bass ran for the two point con
vertion and the Garnet team
trailed by only three. It was all in
vain though as the Garnet squad
couldn't convert on a fourth down

seconds to go and the White team
ran the remaining seconds off the
clock.
Head coach Jim Carlen said
after the game, "It is hard to have
a scrimmage like this when all
during spring practice you try and
make on good team and then you
need two equal teams."
An estimated crowd of 5,000
looked on and it was evident to all
that something was missing from
the usual depth at the quarterback
position. Without a doubt it was.
Jeff Grantz was on the sideline in a
Carolina baseball T-shirt instead
of the familiar number 12 football
jersey and Bass played injured.
Bass, rolled up 252 yards total
offense for the Gamecocks even
though he is to be operated on this
Wednesday for a pulled hamstring.
Carlen said, "You have to give
Photo. I
is Garnet
Bass a lot of credit, everytime he
takes a step out on the field the
back of his leg feels like it is going
to pop."
Carlen said that the quar
terbacking situation is worrying
him. Carlen said, "A lot of people
have been saying what are you
going to do with two good quar
terbacks. They have to remember
that Bass has been hurt the whole
spring practice season andIt is still
possible that Grantz may not be
back."
Carlen said that two of his teams
strengths were in the backs and the
receivers and these positions stood
out in the game Saturday night.
