USC medicj accepting o The University of South Carolina School of Medicine will be ac cepting applications for the 32 openings of the first class through September.. According to Adams Smith, who was acting dean and who is now vice president for Health Affairs, classes are scheduled to begin in January. The accreditation team will visit the school this summer, and its decision is not expected before October. The medical school began ac cepting applications on April 7, and so far 53 of the more than 600 prospective candidates have returned applications. An ad missions committee composed of scientists, clinical physicians on the faculty and practicing physicians will be formed in July to consider applications. Because of the medical schools' tie with the Veterans Ad ministration, the school is giving priority to veterans. "Priority for admission would be given to otherwise qualified iveterans who during their military service had acquired medical military occupation specialities," state the guidelines. Eventually, Smith says, he would like to see the school ac comodate a class of 100 to 120. He says the school will grow with the need of the state. Within four-and-one-half years, the school would be located in the present VA hospital building beside the proposed VA hospital. Space will be generous, Smith said, but presently the school will be divided into several locations with classes and offices in the Williams Brice College of Nursing laboratories in the former Booker T. Washington High School. Plans to set up temporary facilities in the old Columbia Hospital or modular facilities at the present VA Hospital were abandoned because of expense.
