Of The Gamecock staff Tomorrow at the Russell House ieatre, the Cinematic Arts nmittee of the Russell House iiversity Union will present the st in its series of "exam breaker' ns. This first program will ature "The Vampire Lovers," an rated horror flick with volup !aous Ingrid Pitt; plus two Warner Brothers cartoons, "Apes of Wrath" starring Bugs Bunny, and "Birdie and the Beast" with Tweedie and Sylvester. This special presentation will have three special show times: 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. "The Vampire Lovers" features Ingrid Pitt whose talent as a dramatic actress is as great as her shapely measurements. She plays a ruthless vampiress with an eye for female victims and bite below the neck. Peter Cushing, the British "King of Horror Films," is on hand to help destroy this evil woman. Jon Finch, the star of Roman Polan ski's "Macbeth" and Alfred Hit chcock's "Frenzy," has the role of the handsome young hero. Ferdy Mayne, who played the vampiric Count Krolock in Roman Polan ski's "Fearless Vampire Killers," plays a doctor who eventually gets a grisly bite from the vampiress. The bizarre script, based closely on the classic French novella "Carmilla," brings out many unusual aspects of vampirism seldom investigated by the usual I)racula film. For instance, in this production, the vampire may come out during the daylight hours! Roy Ward Baker gives strong r,ection to this British production Ad should be commended for ;ing the film's miniscule budget isely. Baker is best known for .recting such films as "A Night to emember" and "Don't Bother to NEW SHI 0 BLUE [ Regular Bell, Bic Leg, and MOE I @ BRIT( .CtaUELi )od and Knock" with Marilyn Monroe in one of her first major roles. Baker is, in fact, given much credit in making Monroe a star. Baker also cast Diana Rigg in the British television series "The Avengers," and is, therefore, credited with giving her "the big break" she deserved. In a recent interview, Baker said his latest discovery Pitt is going very far. "Ingrid is the one and only girl I have worked with since Marilyn Monroe who possesses a perfect unique combination of true acting ability--brilliant acting ability and unique sex appeal. She is very very smart, brighter than Marilyn was. And she is serious about her work. "She is definitely the most promising actress I have worked with since Marilyn Monroe. She has got the talent of Bette Davis and the sex appeal of Monroe, and she's got the intelligence and wit to match!" "The Vampire Lovers" was financed by American In ternational Pictures (AIP) and made in London by Hammer Film Productions Limited. AIP has a reputation of spending very little money on independent produc tions, and it is safe to assume that they gave Hammer virtually nothing to work with. Hammer has a world-renowned reputation for making quality horror films. The sets in this film are unusually unrealistic, evidently due to the lack of AIP funding. But, even though the film seems below the usual Hammer standards of visual excellence, the other aspects of the film make it one of the better Hammer films of late. The story is remarkably fresh and interesting. The music score by Harry Robinson is extremely good. Ingrid P ween the vampiress and her female victims that adds to the bizarre flavor of the production. The nicest thing about the production, which makes it ideal as an "'exam breaker," is that it can easily be taken two ways: either as a multi -dimensional literary adaptation of a classic novella or liven ex it - a different kind of i as a one-dimensional "pure en tertainment" exploitation film. On Tuesday, it will no doubt be taken lightly, and it is a great deal of fun--lots of action, sex, ad venture, blood and fangs. And to top off the program, there are the two Warner Brothers cartoons! Therefore, take a break from all 1ILOCELOUi I ISCMN. ~G lit >ampire the tedious studying for final exams and spend a couple of hours at the movies. The price is right it's free. And this is not the only "exam breaker" program. More films and more cartoons will be seen all week at the Russell House theatre to break the tedious exam schedule. '4 d
