Soccer clu 20-game 1 BY BILLY COX Of The Gamecock staff It's not that Tim Hankinson is cocky, mind you. But when the president -of the Carolina Soccer Club- unveils his material to his opponents next fall, chances are that he'll he joining the ranks of sothsayers like Joe Namath before Super Bowl IlI. "We've got a 20-game schedule coming up next year," announced Hankinson, "and unless we have some unforeseen lapses, we'll probably win them all. We'll be twice as good as .we were last year." Twice as good as a team that finished 11-4-1, went undefeated in the rugged Southeast Classic tournament, and lost 4 starters? "We're in a position of having almost too much talent," Hankinson said. "We'll have a lot of guys sitting on the bench that could easily start anywhere else. Last year, we weren't exactly sure what we had, and we won our last 8 games. 'Right now, I know we're gonna be tough to beat," he said. flankinson's evaluations were prompted by the progress of the booters' spring season, in which Carolina swept all four games on slate. Key personnel in the wipe out were Tim and his brother Mike, Carl Sebris, Pete Heath, John Rosier, and Tal Albertson. In addition, freshman goalie Paul Bristol is expected to replace defensive whiz Ken Jefferson, and Yank Albers has turned down a coaching offer in Virginia to return to the helm of USC. "Our spring schedule was a new experience for us," Hankinson admitted, "and I'd say that it was very successful. We've been trying to get our act together for next year, and we're looking good right now." If preparation means anything, the Gamecocks probably have the competition beat hands down. USC has been holding twice a-day practices and will resume them on August 25. One of the Carolina's pluses is the ability to recruit local talent. The Garnet squads leading ground gainer was Kevin Long who ran for 56 yards on 11 carries. -Noticeably missing from the spring game was Casper Carter who was sidelined with a leg injury. The receiving end was im pressive also as Scott Thomas and Stevie Stephens both grabbed 100. yards worth of receptions. Thomas had five catches for the White squad while Stephens had eight catches for the Garnet team. Carlen summed up the whole spring practice when a reporter asked him if he was satisfied with the spring as a whole. Carlen said, "I can't be satisfied with the spring practice. Satisfied means to me that we have real good football players in every position and this is not the case at Carolina right now." Car len said. "The only way a coach can win in a game like this is if nobod- gets -iurt. It looks like we only de few bruises but nobody seriously hurt so that is a pilus." "The potential for soccer in South Carolina is finally catching on," he-said, "and now that we've got our program moving, kids are asking about us and wanting to come here." Varsity programs at other area colleges have cut into the recruiting game somewhat, but Hankinson believes that the Gamecocks have the prestige to offset them. "We lost one prospect to the College of Charleston on a scholarship," he confessed, "but even so, we're gonna be strong." Co:fidence, depth, and discipline should mold Carolina into one of the top soccer powers in the South. WATCH FOR I MAILBOX ANI Women's softball The women's softball team, defending state champions, lost their title to Winthrop College in the finals of the State Tournament. The Chicks first defcated Coker College 16-4. Then Carolina came on strong to down Claflin College, 14-6. Karen Pappas pitched the finest game of her career with 11 strike outs. Mary Ann Olson, right fielder, hit a grand slam home run. Carolina met a strong Winthrop team in the finals and lost 8-3. Five of Carolina's players were named to the All-Tournament team. ' The players were Nona Kerr, Charlene DuBose, Melissa Dean, Shay Kelly and Mary Ann Olson. The Chicks ended their season with a 8-4 record. Also two recruits have been signed from Florida and North Carolina. Intramurals The intramural office announced their winners in the all sports trophy races in each of the three divisions. In the fraternity division Chi Psi captured their division as they tallied 800 points for the year. Sigma Phi Epsilon came in a close second with 791 points and Pi Kappa Phi was third with 696 points. The Residence hall division championship was taken by Maxcy with 815 points. NROTC had 612 points while Town Men were third with 583. Rugby An injury-ridden Carolina Rugby team lost a close game to the Atlanta Renagades 64 here Sun day. Atlanta scored all their points in the first half on two penalty kicks. Carolina played excellent defense in the second half, but could not manage to score.
