'Blow I

Where has old Jeff Beck been
these last two years since the
demise of his catastrophically
unsuccessful cailoboration with the
inflated -egos of Tim Bogert and
Carmine Appice? Apparently it
took Beck-a while to get his breath

the people involved were genuinely
dedicated. The vast majority were
there for other reasons.
A student joins an organization
for one or both of the following
reasons: either to meet his own
need, be it career oriented, social
or recreational, or to help someone
else meet their needs. From the
material presented in this article it
would appear the first objective is
the most important to today's
student.
An appraisal by Robert Todd,
Director of the University Union
and the Russell House, seems most
apt. "Students want things tha will
benefit them specifically... (and)
things never change, they just tend
to run in cycles."
Students are no more uninvolved
in non-academic affairs than they
have ever been. It just appears so
because their focus has shifted
from serving others to serving
themselves.

composure he headed into Lon
don's AIR Studios and there, under
the care of long-time Beatle
producer George Martin, put
together a superb instrumental
offering entitled "Blow By Blow,"
his slickest, most consistently
clever album ever and one of the
finest collections of rock-jazz this
decade his heard.
With Beck again is keyboard
player Max Middleton, a veteran of
the second Jeff Beck Group, the
one Beck formed after he had
recouperated from a near-fatal
automobile accident that ended the
first Jeff Beck Group (which had
Faces Rod Stewart and Ron Wood
as members). Middleton has
matured into a very destrous
keyboard man, and his musical
dialogs with Beck's guitar are
exquisite, especially on "You
Know What I Mean," "Air
Blower," and "Scatterbrain."
The music on "Blow By Blow" is
some of the most sophisitcated
music heard today, not necessarily
by virtue of its complexity
(although this element is definitely
a stimulating part of the album)
but more because of its polish.
First, the musicianship present is
incredibly accomplished, Beck in
particular. He is so dynamically
creative: listening to him play -
makes one think "My God, he
makes it sound so easy." In a
word, both Beck and the band are
smooth, a smoothness acquired
through expertise. Second, George
Martin does for Jeff Beck what he

always managed to do for the
Beatles. That is, he has a truly
refined sense of good production
and musical balance. In addition,
his excellent orchestral
arrangements grace "Air
Blower," "Scatterbrain," and
"Diamond Dust." It is very nice to
hear some artistically straight
forward orchestration for a
change. It is also nice to hear
George Martin produce some artist
of higher caliber than America, but
"Blow By Blow"
that's a different story. "Diamond
Dust" is so beautifully lush that it
gave this reviewer goose pimples
on the initial hearing, and
reminded me of "Lammy" on Jan
Akkerman's "Tabernacle."
"Blow By Blow" seems to be an
album that would appear to
several audiences. It certainly
would find favor with an old Beck
fan, as it would surely do with any
jazz buffs. Beatle lovers will

fan. Personally, I would like to
thank Jeff Beck for not charging
into this album. It is certainly
worth the wait.
