Economy slou BY MARK DILLARD Of The Gamecock staff Job offers to graduating seniors are coming unusually late this year as companies wait to assess the economy, USC's Placement Bureau director says. Placement Director Frank F. Johnson said companies are waiting as late as this week to send recruiters on campus. "I think they are waiting to see if business picks up." "We've tried to get more recruiters this year. In good times they'll come. But now, we have to write them to come talk to our students." he said. Despite the last minute visits, job offers will be fewer this year than in the past. "I think business by fall will pick up where there'll be some openings. But there's no way that everybody graduating from college will get a job, at least the job they want," he said. Students having the least trouble are those with degrees in engineering, and to a lesser extent, business administration, according to. Johnson. Most recruiters are coming to see students in these fields. Johnson said the average starting salary of students recruited through the bureau was more than $10,000. Besides bringing in recruiters, the bureau sends bulletins about openings to university departments. Students remaining in the state may find it easier to find a job, Johnson said. The student will become experienced at job in terviews and may learn of openings with other organizations. If a student is unable to get the job he wants, - Johnson suggested doing whatever is available to gain experience. "The experience will help you get a better job some day," he said. Landing the right job does not insure success in a career, Johnson said."That's the thing a lot of students forget. It's how you do on a job that determines how you do with a company." The University could do more to guide younger students in their career goals, he said. "There is no way of telling students what to study and what not to study. "But I think in some way we could tell fresh men and sophomores what the job market in certain fields will be when they finish school. The thing I'm especially interested in is to get students to think about what they want in life and study to get that thing." Placement figures show that 702 students got jobs directly through the bureau last year. The rest did so on their own or came to the University with a job waiting for them through relatives or other connections, Johnson said. "A lot of students that come to school already have jobs," Johnson said. "The placement bureau is for people who don't have a job." S.C. 9 . Ig tance call talk with. A] is 779-8355.
