MONDAY, APRIL 14, 1975 sw 11'Undreds pulled for their favorite sor Rosmer drops BY BILL GRANT Of The Gamecock staff Plans for legal action by a defeated Student Government Association (SGA) vice presidential candidate have been dropped because of Student Legal Aid's hesitancy in persuing the matter through -the student court system. David L. Rosmer had said, after numerous difficulties forced the postponement of SGA primary elections March 4, he would attempt to gain punitive damages of $615 through the USC court system. However, Rosmer said Saturday the suit was never filed. "The status of the suit is that it has been dropped because the people at the law school (Student Legal Aid) don't want to fool with it, for whatever their reasons," Rosmer said. "And I personally don't want to take it to the state courts." Rosmer, a graduate student in history, said he talked to a representative of Legal Aid about a possible case after announcing his intentions to file suit. "The law school attorney went to check around and see what would be the best course to follow. Apparently he checked it out and decided the best course was to drop the whole thing." Rosmer said he ruled out any action in either state or Richland County courts because of the unique nature of the case. He did say, however, a local attorney told him he had an "excellent" chance of winning any legal action whereever he took the case. The threatened suit would have charged former SGA President Leigh Leventis and former SGA Elections Commissioner Bob Swelgin with mismanagement of SGA's primary elections March 6. Numerous problems, ranging from the omission of a candidate's name from the official ballot to incomplete voter registration lists, forced SGA officials to cancel the election. Although he said he has no plans to do so, Rosmer said plans for legal action have not been totally scrapped. "I can reopen it at any time. I don't think I will, but it can be done," he said. Rosmer said additional factors also influenced his decision not to pursue the matter further, in cluding an illness in his immediate family. Student affairs head named BY BILL PRATT Of The Gamecock staff Dr. James B. Campbell, student union administrator at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), has been named to replace vice president for student affairs Charles H. Witten July 1. Upon the Board of Trustees approval Campbell will fill the vacancy after Witten steps down June 30. Campbell's approval by USC President William H. Patterson and Provost Keith E. Davis came after a search committee narrowed the original list of 270 candidates to three. Patterson and Davis made the final decision. Reached at his home in Ypsilanti, Mich., Campbell said he was pleased with the decision. Instead of making specific changes initially, he plans to "spend a lot of time talking with people. Then with the staff we will find out what is the direction we will take." "I don't think there is a primary source of information. Continued on Page 2 Press council The Gamecock seeks feedback In an attempt to find out what the USC community wants to read in their student newspaper, The Gamecock is planning a press council from 2 to 5 p.m. April 21 at the Russell House Theater. Seven editors from the newspaper will be at the meeting to answer questions students, faculty and staff have about the paper's coverage and to listen to suggestions and comments for making the newspaper better. According to plans, the panel of editors will sit on the stage of the theater. Students and other people in the audience have their questions directed to the appropriate editor. The reason for the council, according to managing editor Steve Parker, is to give the staff of The Gamecock a better idea of how the community views the purpose of the student newspaper. Parker said the entire session will be taped so it can be replayed for use by current editors and future editors. Scott Kearns, a senior journalism major, will be the council moderator. The editors who will be at the council are: editor-in-chief.
