MAIN'I Emergei BY MICKEY TRIMARCHI Of The Gamecock staff An emergency maintenance program for housing, initiated by W. S. Turbeville of CampuE Planning, was put into effect March 10. The program, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, was proposed by Turbeville to the Board of Trustees to aid those students with an emergency problem who did not know who to contact. "It was in the planning stages for a year or more," he said. "I was prompted by the married students and their complaints that they didn't know who to get in touch with when an emergency came up." Utilities emergencies are relayed to Edwin Shelly and building emergencies are referred to Pete Stiehr. Stiehr cited many of the emergencies as "just a simple plumbing job or a stopped-up commode." Other problems the Maintenance Services have to contend with are flodding, air conditioning problems and heating failures. From Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 a. m. and 4:30 p. m. all calls are handled by a fully-staffed Maintenance Services crew at 7774217. The night emergency crew works from 4:30 p. m. to 12:30 a. m. The staff of four consists of a trades worker supervisor, a material coordinator dispatcher, a permanent trades workers helper and a temporary trades worker helper. A utilities supervisor takes all calls from 12:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. The Campus Police dispatcher at 777 4215 handles all calls during this time slot. On the weekends all calls are the responsibility of Campus Police. It is estimated that 75 per cent of the weekend calls occur during the day, according to Turbevlle. From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. a maintenance mechanic plus a trades worker are on call. During this time period routine work requests for the weekend will be done as time permits. Between 4:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. the police dispatcher will take calls and forward them to either Shelly or Stiehr. "During the week people used to call their problems in to the police. Sometimes there were an awful lot of calls. Now they can call the Physical Plant until 12:30," Stiehr said. "During the evening hours the Utility foreman and his staff are limited in their ability to take care of the actual prolems. But they can identify any problem and then refer it to our crew," Stiehr said. The Maintenance Services will try to respond to all calls. "But we have to establish a priority," Stiehr said. "Sometimes we may not be able to take action right away, but if it is truly an emergency and there aren't enough men around, we'll call in more. "I'm really pleased so far," Stiehr continued, "but so far we haven't really been tested. I have my best maintenance men on this program and I'm very proud of them. They volunteered for this project because they recognized the need for a program such as this. Whenever the students' en vionment is upset, we attack that problem as fast as we can.
