TEXAS RANGERS - Waiting at the throne should Oakland fall are the youthful Texas Rangers. With manager Billy Martin cracking the whip, the Rangers just missed catching the A's last season. But the Rangers caught the postseason laurels as Jeff Burroughs was named MVP and Mike Hargrove got rookie of the year. Ferguson Jenkins was 25-12 and Jim Bibby was 19-19, but overall, Texas lacked pitching depth. Burroughs, Hargrove, Toby Harrah and Lenney Randle provide the Rangers with a solid offense, and the acquisition of Willie Davis helps at the plate and defensively, where Texas was woefully inept last year. If Martin can patch up the holes, look out for the Rangers this year. 3. MINNESOTA TWINS - The Twins came alive in the second half of the season in 1974. Hitting is Minnesota's forte as they tied Texas for the league lead last year. Rod Carew won the AL batting title, Tony Oliva handled the DH chores quite capably (.286), and Steve Braun, Bob Darwin, Lanny Hisle and Steve Brye all can handle the bat. Pitching is a question mark with only Bert Blyeven, Joe Decker and Bill Campbell coming off respectable seasons. But the Twins might make on what little pitching they do have. 4. KANSAS CITY ROYALS - The Royals have to be a better club than they looked in the waning weeks of the 1974 season. Kansas City went from three games off the pace in mid-August to thirteen out at the end of the season. The Royals have a solid outfield in Hal McRae, Amos Otis and Jim Wohlford. John Mayberry provides power hitting while Vada Pinson and Harmon Killebrew will share the DH role. Steve Busby was 22 14 last year and pitched the second no-hitter of his career and Al Fitzmorris was 13-6, but the Royals need help in the bullpen and more depth before they can challenge for the division title. 5. CHICAGO WHITE SOX - The White Sox lost Dick Allen and Ron Santo and that would destroy most teams. But Chicago's brain trust believes team unity will improve. Slugger Bill Melton has third base to himself with Santo gone and Ken Henderson has finally arrived as a big league star (.292, 20 homers, 95 RBI's). Wilbur Wood and Jim Kaat were both 20 game winners last year and Terry Forster was the league's top reliever in 1974. Bucky Dent and Jorge Orta had good years in 1974 with Orta hitting .316, second best in the AL. If Chuck Tanner can find the right combination, this could be the real darkhorse team in the American League. 6. CALIFORNIA ANGELS - The Angels have one of the best pitching staffs in the league with Nolan Ryan, Andy Hassler, Frank Tanana and Bill Singer. But even the managerial wizardry of Dick Williams couldn't produce a miracle in the Angels bullpen, which recorded only 12 saves last year.
