entrtainm BY CMIRCK CROMER Entertainment Editor Hot damn, I love that country-rock and bluegrass music. Between 7,00 and 8,000 students crammed into the &Qsrolina Coliseum Tuesday night to witness perhaps the finest concert to have ap peared in Columbia in over a year as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Arthur, Hurley and Gottleib combined to bring the house down. The concert was sponsored by the University Union Contemporary Sounds Committee and was free to all USC students with an ID and their guests. Because King Frank McGuire and his 12 basketball worshippers decided to play basketball an extra hour, the doors of the Coliseum were not opened till almost 8 p.m., causing thousands of students to stand in the cold. and rain outside. One guy remarked that when it came to choosing between the welfare of 8,000 students or a handful of athletes, the University would say to hell with the students in order to keep King Frank and his turkeys happy. The extra wait didn't appear to bother most 9f those attending. No doubt a little pot and liquor kept them cheerful. Arthur, Hurley and Gottlieb made their appearance onstage around 8:15 p.m. to open the show. They were a last minute replacement for the cancelled Masters of the Airwaves and proved to be a highly enjoyable act. The group consisted of five musicians interchanging electric guitars, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, electric fiddle and piano to deliver both a laid-back mellow and fast-paced country-rock sound. The music was mostly of the easy listening genre with 'a three-part vocal harmony. Personally, I would have preferred to have seen them perform in a smaller area, such as the Pure Prarie League did on the Russell House Patio last year. Their style of music is geared towards that type of situation. However, the crowd still loved them. Arthur, Hurley and Gottlieb ended their fifty-minute set with a couple of country rockers featuring Gottlieb on electric fiddle. He was really flying on those fiddle strings, making me wonder where he's been all night. Until then he had remained still on stage, content to sing background harmonies and smoothly stroke his fiddle. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band began their set around 9:15 p.m. before an ecstatic audience that was ready to footstomp, handclap and square dance its way to happiness. Using pure bluegrass and country-rock as their medium, they captured the audience's attention for nearly an hour and a half. With traditional bluegrass numbers like the "Battle of New Orleans," "Rocky Top," "The Randy Lynn Rag," "Jam balaya," "Diggy Diggy Lo," and "Cripple Creek," the NGDB created more ex citement in the Coliseum than I've seen in years. Their repertoire was well-planned consisting of both blue-grass, country-rock and slower-paced Dirt Band tunes. The normal amount of NGDB classics was provided including "Some of Shelly's Blues," "Cosmic Cowboy," "Resign Yourself to Me," "Mr. Bojangles," "Honky Tonking," an infrequently used d Rhett '44 ng jail, though, Thomas Mitchell make des to give the most memorable film th ood timb in several ever see. The incredible versatility of all the Dirt Band members was amazing yet John McEuen on Fiddle, banjo, pedal steel guitar and mandolin stood out. How one musician can master so many instruments is beyond me, yet he handled all with the grace of a master. However, no one member should be overlooked or singled out since it's the well-mixed combination of all the per formers that give the Dirt Band its distinctive sound, a sound that has never been successfully attained by other bands. Ending their set with "Diggy Diggy Lo" was excellent strategy as the crowd just had to have more bluegrass and fiddle music. Returning to the stage after a thunderous ovation, the Dirt Band com menced to play a rock-oriented version of "Orange Blossom Special" that lasted more than five minutes. The ever-present fiddle kept the tune in the traditional bluegrass vein much to the delight of the crowd. Their second encore number and final song for the night was "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." Arthur, Hurley and Gottlieb and the vast majority of the audience all sang this tune together, giving everyone in the Coliseum a feeling of togetherness. The only criticism that I could inflict on the NGDB that night was their lack of originality when it comes to composing and performing their own music. Almost every song they used was written by someone else. Even so, the Dirt Band is an unbeatable crowd pleaser. Spring vacation will be a letdown compared to the excitement I experienced at the Dirt Band concert Tuesday night. It all goes to show that bluegrass and country-rock are King (and not McGuire) at USC. return Sing' along with the Marx Brothers. this the he hurts.
