Approximately 2,440 students, or 15-18 per cent of the student body, voted in Tuesday's elec tion, according to official returns. All major SGA offices, except for the position of secretary, will be decided in run-off elections today. Terri Debruhl easily defeated Walter Metz to win the secretary's position. Efland and Hill survived a field of seven candidates to win positions in today's run-off. Efland finished with 677 votes while Hill tallied 6M votes. 'WUSC wants FM st Pattersor BY BILL PRATT Of The Gamecock staff WUSC-AM's search for a FM frequency has been approved by USC President WIlliam H. Patterson. The station also has received a list of four available FM frequencies in the Columbia area from Educational FM Association. But, to operate on three of the frequencies WUSC-AM must make special engineering changes or the station must try to waive Federal Communications Commission (FCC), spacing requirements. "I don't have any objections" to the project Patterson said. "I think they should get somewhere so somebody can hear them." "As far as my office is con cerned, we are through with it," he said. Patterson's approval came after the Student Board of Publications and Com munications approved and RUGBY--Carolina's rugby team downed Clemson 14-3 Sunday. Pagme. ntial n and an The election was relatively free of problems which plagued a March 4 attempt cancelled after a candidate's name was missing from the ballot, according to Rick Anthony, SGA elections com missioner. "Everything seemed to go pretty smooth, I have not heard of any major complaints about how the election was run," An thony said. Despite the lack of problems, Anthony said the effect of the aborted effort was felt in the number of students voting. Anthony attributed the low turnout to two things. "First would be last week's screw-up. Secondly, I would say that the lack of student interest in student ation i okays ~ recommended to him the station's search four weeks ago. The approval by Patterson does not mean that the University has officially endorsed the move to FM. The study must be approved by Provost Keith E. Davis and final approval must be given by the Board of Trustees. The study showing possible open frequencies makes twc recommendations. "We recommend that FN channel 205 be considered as i first choice at the University o South Carolina," the repor submitted by Edward F. Perr. Jr. of Educational Fh4 Association says. This channel, the report says, is "in full compliance with al FCC allocations standard: without the need for specia showings or waivers of th4 allocation rules." This frequency is also the mos favored by Ed Turner, statioi manager. The other SGA positions and three additional senate seats will be decided today. Anthony said no major changes are planned in the election procedure. Trey Lott and Jim Stuart will vie for the office of SGA vice president. Lott finished with M3 votes while Stuart trailed with 564. Peter Dominick and David Frierson will contest the office of treasurer following Tuesday's voting. Frierson led the balotting with 688 votes while Dominick finsihed with 522 votes. Polls will open at 9 a.m. ;earch frequency as of Feb. 18. But application for the frequency cannot be made without -final approval, Turner said. If this channel has already been occupied, the report "suggests that the proposed station be shifted to channel 220D and the necessary waivers sought and the special engineering showings made." In order to get this frequency, WUSC-AM must waive the FCC's mileage spacing rules. The rule requires a Class D educational t and Class A commercial F broadcast station be 30 miles I apart. WBLR-FM in Batesburg, S.C. is 28.5 miles from WUSC-AM's proposed broadcast site. The report however says "there is a reasonably good chance the required waiver could be obtained since similar waivers have been granted in the past."
