In the face of rising prices, a
group of individuals in the Carolina
Community is making a "co
operative" effort to survive.
"The Co-Operative," a
restaurant and natural foods store
at 221 Pickens Street serves as a
center for the effort. Members of
the co-op can buy food and services
from fellow members 'at co-op
prices.
The Co-op is a non-profit
Drganization that is controlled by
the membership. There are two
categories of membership. A
"working member" pays five
dollars each year and has a flexible
work requirement at the Co-Op.
Working members are charged a
en per cent mark-up on co-op
tems, while non working Co-op
nembers pay $10 each year and
ire charged a 25 per cent mark-up.
Included in the co-operative is a
"skills collective," which offers
earpentry, plumbing and auto
mechanics services. This "skills
:ollective" provides inexpensive
services for the community, as
vell as providing jobs for workers.
Many Free University courses
re being co-ordinated with the Co
)p, including natural healing,
ioga, organic gardening, quilting
md massage.
