Varney would also like to see the dining services franchise opened to other corhpanies' bids every few years, improved maid services and additional parking spaces allocated to students. Unlike many of the other can didates, Varney does not see the need to involve off-campus students in campus activities. "There's nothing we can do to make them get involved in the University," Varney said. "If they want to get involved they can. The opportunities are there, if they read the newspaper." Varney also favors a system of pre-registration in which the student would receive a receipt at the time of pre-registering, to assure him of no chance of being closed out of that course. "It's essential if we are to have an effective student body. Without a real voting voice, we are effectively ignored." Shealy proposes a long platform which would bring about change in Students pick i USC students and faculty can now nominate a faculty member and graduate assistant for good teaching awards to be presented at May commencement ceremonies. The $1,000 Amoco Good Teaching Award, originally the Russell Teaching Award, will go to the person best exemplifying ex cellence in classroom teaching. The Amoco Foundation also awards the outstanding teacher in the regional campus system. This year's winners will be selected from persons nominated by faculty, students and former students. All nominations must be submitted by March 10. Faculty nominations should be sent to E.H. Beardsley, selection committee chairman, 104 Humanities building, USC. "We need to have something where the student body will have an idea where it stands academically in relation to other students." Additional changes proposed by Shealy include an optional 24-hour open house plan, repairs for the older dorms on campus, and creation of a commuter student center which would be housed in the new wing of Russell House. Shealy said the proposed center is a feasible idea and he has already discussed it with Robert Todd, Russell House manager. One major change he wants is the installation of a shuttle bus system, which would service the campus and be run, hopefully, by University Union. Shealy also favors greater student voice in determining student seating sections at football and basketball games. He also favors admittance to sporting events on a first-come, first-served basis merely by presenting a student ID. A free tuition plan for Vietnam veterans, and the creation of two new SGA cabinet positions--one for another minority seat and the other a foreign students seat is desirable, he said. Shealy hopes to initiate these changes by having a united student voice supporting the SGA president.
