Carolina's men's swim team
finished first and second in five
straight events to beat Florida
State 78-35 Saturday at the USC
Pool.
The Gamecocks led 34-18 when
the five events streak began, and
Carolina outscored the Seminoles
40-5 in those five events.
But the biggest surprise of the
meet, aside from the large point
spread, was Carolina's victory in
the 400 yard medley relay.
Carolina coach Alan Gentry vir
tually conceded the event to the
Seminoles, who have swam faster
times in the race all season long.
But the Carolina team of Casey
Claflin, David Gribble, Fred Eh
mke and Chip Nesman swam a
school record and NCAA qualifying
titne of 3:32.4 to edge FSU by 1.1
seconds.
"We were really surprised with
the medley relay," Gentry said.
"We thought Casey wouldn't go too
fast because he was tired, but our
first two men did it by building up
. the big lead," he said.
Gribble, a freshman from South
Miami, Fla., also won the 200 yard
breatstroke, and was voted
Gamecock of the eet for his
performance.

The Carolina Wrestling Club was
clobbered by Pembroke State 47-3,
in the Carolina Coliseum on
Saturday afternoon. The match,
underway immediately after the
Marquette basketball game, was
actually a lot closer (trite, but
true) than the final margin would
suggest. PSU was aided by forfeit
points in the 118 and the 126
divisions.
USC's 177-classer Ike Houck
continued to sparkle as he cap
tured a 13-6 decision from PSU's
Bill Starks. Houck wasted little
time in the first in taking com

Houck seized a slight 5-3 edge at
the buzzer. Relying on his speed in
the second period, Houck blitzed
Starks with a quick takedown, a
near fall, and ho-hummed his way
to another patented easy win.
Another classic match-up pitted
two lanky look-alikes, PSU's David
Miller and Carolina's Phil McKee,
together in the 134-class. The
audience was revived to life as the
first perio'1 ended in a virtual
standoff. McKee, however, began
to tire in the second and it was a
matter of Miller slowly wearing
him down which enabled him to
walk off with a four point decision.
