Deadline BY LEE POWELL Of The Gamecock staff The filing date to run for any Student Government Association (SGA) office has been extended by the USC Student Senate to Feb. 26. The measure brought much debate as to whether a student could file for any seat or just those for which no other student has filed. Originally the last date to file was Feb. 19, but so many senate seats remained open the deadline was extended. Sen. Rick Funk made the original motion to extend filing dates. Sen. Tommy Efland amended it to include all SGA positions. After Efland's amend ment passed, Sen. Randle Stevens proposed to nullify Efland's amendment, extending filing dates only for those seats which remain vacant. Stevens said the people who did file on time showed interest and made an effort to file before other people could. With the extended filing deadline, some people might run for lack of something better to do and SGA could wind up with apathetic people, he said. Stevens added the senate is penalizing the people who did file on time by extending the dates until next Wednesday. Sen. Bill Outlaw spoke against Stevens' amendment. "I don't see the harm in opening the thing back up," Outlaw said. He added that students should be given the op portunity to file. Stevens' amendment was defeated. Stan Rayford called for the formation of a Minority Affairs Committee to be added to the list of proposed committees in the rules. Sen.. Frank Shealy supported the measure saying, "We have had problems with credibility with constitutents in trying to be a more representative body to the students." The amendment passed. Sen. Rick Mitne proposed an amendment which stated if a senate seat is vacated for two months or less before spring elections, the seat shall remain vacated until it is filled by the spring election. He said he was trying to avoid special elections. Sen. Jim Stuart questioned whether a seat should renain vacant for two months. He proposed an amendment to fill vacant seats during the two month period. The dormitory president would appoint a person to fill the senate seat. Off-campus vacancies would be filled by appointment by the senate president. Stuart's amendment was defeated, and Milne's amendment passed. Later in the meeting, Efland proposed a constitutional change. He said that any vacancies prior to spring semester should be filled by election, and those occurring during the spring semester should stay -open. This change was ac cepted. Allen Lawhead, president of the senate, suggested that upon passage, the new rules go into effect by the next senate meeting. They said it would be good to operate under the new rules in order to see what mistakes exist. An amendment to the elections bill was passed at Wednesday's session. It provides for District 16, on-campus married students, to be divided into three precincts. Last semester, the district included only University Terrace and Woodland Terrace. The amendment created a third seat--for Carolina Gardens and Cliff Apartments. News briefs Borg appointed Dr. Thomas K. Borg has been appointed director of admissions for the new School of Medicine at the University of South Carolina. Borg, currently director of the Electron Microscope Laboratory at North Dakota State Un versity, will assume the position on a full time basis June 1. He is now working with the School part-time. A native of Chicago,* Ill., Borg holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Colorado State University. Gittinger honored C. McFerron Gittinger, professor of marketing at the University of South Carolina since 1944, has been added to the University's roster of Distinguished Professors. In addition to his teaching duties, Gittinger has been secretary of the faculty and the Faculty Senate since 1972. Gittinger has bachelor degrees in business administration and in economics and psychology from the University of Oklahoma a master's in retailing from New York University and has done graduate work at the Graduate School of Business Administration, Wall Street Division, at NYU. Hypnotist at Spur Edwin Baron, a hypnotist, will appear at the Golden Spur at 8 p.m. Tuesday February 24.
