Carolina's swim team holds its
final home meet of the season
Saturday when the Gamecocks
face fellow independent Florida
State.
Carolina coach Alan Gentry says
he expects this meet to give him a
good indication of whether the
Gamecocks can win the National
Independent meet to be held later
this year. Carolina finished fifth in
the meet last year and has already
faced three of the teams that
finished ahead of them. Of those
three USC lost only to last year's
champion Miami.
Florida State finished 22nd in the
nation last year, two spots ahead of
Carolina, and Gentry expects the
Seminoles to be competitive again
this year.
"They've been tapering off
(their work load) for a while so
they should be good and rested for
this meet. It's really going to be a
case of who out-toughs who,"
Gentry said.
Gentry said the Seminoles would

be favored in both relay events, but
added that Carolina might be able
to pick up points in the distance
freestyle races and possibly the 200
yard backstroke. The other
events, Gentry said, could be won
by either team. The teams' best
times in some of these events differ
by less than a second. He said it is
hard to compare FSU's divers with
Carolina's because they have been
competing under a different
scoring system.
"This is the kind of team you like
to swim against because it spurs
your team on to a better effort,"
Gentry said. "With the exception
of one year the series between us
has been close. And their coach,
Terry Carlisle, is the kind of guy
that just loves to beat your ears
off," he said.
. "I don't think I've ever been
guilty of underestimating an op
ponent and I certainly won't do it
this time," Gentry said.
The meet begins at 4 p.m.
Saturday at the USC Pool.
