Carolina's final road trip of the
regular season, to Dayton and
Toledo, could tell the story on the
Gamecocks' chances for a fifth
consecutive bid to the NCAA
basketball playoffs and a seventh
straight 20 win season.
Following a Wednesday night
home game with Georgia
Southern, coach Frank McGuire's
Gamecocks travel to Dayton to
meet the Flyers Saturday night
and then move over to Toledo for a
Monday night game before
returning home to end the season
with four consecutive games in
Carolina Coliseum. Both Dayton
and Toledo games will be televised
back to South Carolina.
The Gamecocks are 10-0 at home
this season, but have won only
three. of nine games on foreign
courts for an overall 13-6 record.
The latest away game loss was a
66-65 heartbreaker in overtime at
Notre Dame Saturday before a
national television audience.
To reach to 20 win plateau in
regular season play, Carolina
would have to win all seven
remaining games. Home games
remaining include a Feb. 22
meeting with nationally ranked
Marquette, a 69-60 winner over the
Gamecocks earlier in the season at
Milwaukee. Other home opponents

Georgia Southern had a 6-12
record going into Wednesday
night's game in which McGuire
was going after his 199th win in 11
years at South Carolina. He's won
465 collegiate games during 25
seasons. Georgia Southern lost a
101-77 Sunday afternoon game to
Florida State in Savannah, in
which the winning Seminoles shot a
blistering 72.4 per cent from the

Junior 6-9 center Tom Boswell
continues to lead Gamecock
scoring and rebounding with
averages of 17.6 and 8.7, respec
tively. The 23 points scored by 6-8
junior Alex English against Notre
Dame edged him into second place
ahead of 6-2 junior guard Mike
Dunleavy. English is averaging
15.8 and Dunleavy 15.7 points per

Chicks win
The Carolina Chicks, avenging
an early season loss, downed South
Carolina State 65-57 on Monday
night at State.
The victory brought Carolina's
record to 17-4 on the season.
Earlier this year, Carolina
dropped a 49-48 decision to State on
the Chicks home court. Carolina
shot poorly from the field
throughout the game. The Chicks
head coach Pam Backhaus said,
"We played a super defensive
game. We managed to make
several steals which enabled us to
start our fast break. The fast
break is what won the game for
us."

Chicks fought back to keep the
game close throughout the final
period. With three minutes
remaining, Carolina finally pushed
into a commanding 10 point lead
which proved to be too much for
State to overcome.
Backhaus said, "South Carolina
State will be the darkhorse team in
the state tournament. They are

Denise Naney led the Chicks in

Martha Suber with 19 points and
Charlene Dubose with 14 points.
