Sports Editor Hockey Drought Professional hockey fans at Carolina are suffering a second consecutive year of television blackouts of NHL action by the local NBC affiliate, WIS-TV. The 1974-75 season has been one of the most exciting in the history of the league, and the only televised coverage in Columbia is one minute highlights on the local news programs. Local viewers have already missed out on several exciting games that NBC has televised, while WIS prefers to show old movies. Last Sunday for example, everyone could watch Godzilla raise a little hell in Tokoyo, killing any Oriental that crossed his path. Sounds almost as violent as professional hockey. Who wouldn't rather watch the battles of the Rangers, Flyers, or Bruins on Sunday afternoons than see these old movies? With the Atlanta Flames battling for a playoff spot (the only sports franchise in Atlanta that can make that claim), it seems that local hockey interest should be on the rise. And if techincal knowledge about the game is still lacking around here, hockey fans will tell you that you can learn everything about hockey from NBC's Peter Puck. Perhaps it is time for another survey to be done concerning local hockey interest by WIS. It is sheer agony to have to miss the Saturday Stanley Cup playoffs again this year. Playoff possibilities Carolina's hopes for a fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA playoffs received some bad news and some good news Saturday. The bad news is the 66-65 defeat at Notre Dame gave Carolina six defeats with several tough games still to be played. The good news is that Notre Dame coach Digger Phelps, a member of the selection committee, voiced his support for the Gamecocks as a NCAA tournament team. Was Phelp's just being a gracious winner or does he really believe Carolina merits such accolades? Considering Notre Dame had an easier time in defeating UCLA at South Bend than they did in beating the Gamecocks, Phelp's comments are probably sincere. Although the East has several independent schools with good records (St. John's, Holy Cross, Syracuse, Rutgers, and Providence), Carolina still deserves condideration because of a tougher schedule than most of these teams- mentioned. However, with two more road games and Marquette and Canisius coming to Columbia, it is still probably too early for the Gamecocks to be planning for spring break at the Eastern regionals, at the NIT in New York, or even at Fort Lauderdale watching the tournaments on television. Cremin's tough task Congratulations and best wishes to Bobby Cremins for a successful start on his coaching career. Having already proved his worth in the wars of recruiting, Cremins has the basketball kn owledge to develop young players and the ability to get 100 per cent out of his players. He will need both of these attributes at a basketball desert like Applachian State. Sports Editor SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Carolina-Notre Dame series remained true to form Saturday afternoon as the Irish downed Carolina in overtime 66-65. The series between Carolina and Notre Dame has been a super one as four of five meetings have been decided by 4-point spreads or less and Saturday's game was no ex ception. The contest, which was tied 12 times, ended in the first overtime as the Irish took the lead with 3:11 to go in the five minute overtime and never relinquished it. Carolina did have their chances to win the contest, but they wasted each opportunity. With 11 seconds to go the Irish had the ball and set up a special play for scoring leader Adrian Dantley. The Irisn's head coach Richard "Digger" Phelps said after the game, "The play was a side out of bounds play specially designed for Adrian (Dantley). He waited too long and then had to force the shot with a South Carolina man on him." Carolina captured the rebound and it was the Gamecocks turn to try and keep the game from going into overtime. Seven seconds remained on the clock and it w&s Carolina's bail at the Irish's end of the court. Two factors stood out as reasons why the Gamecocks lost in over time to Notre Dame. First the Gamecocks had to play without the services of Tom Boswell who fouled out with 2:52 remaining in regulation time. Secondly, the Gamecocks foul shooting hurt them in the overtime as they could only convert one of four attempts in the overtime. Carolina's head coach Frank McGuire said after the game, "Boswell'a- fouling out ended our real chances of winning this af sal $25 10 NOW - An e xquisite K7" turquoise n< 'Y and earring Novajos, Zi cient traditi $12 to $2 cosI STREE ;QUASH BLOSSOMS Reg. The foul shooting for the game and also for the overtime hurt the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks were 11-19 from the line during the game and missed three crucial free chances during the overtime. The Gamecocks took the early lead in the overtime as English connected on the first of a one and one chance from the foul line. English's second foul shot did not drop and the Gamecocks one point lead went quickly as the Irisn's reserve guard Don Williams hit on a fast break layup to put Notre Dame into the lead to stay. The Gamecocks chances did not end here though as with 12 seconds the stubborn Carolina team still had life with Billy Truit at the foul line with two shots and the score Notre Dame 66 Carolina 63. Truitt missed both shots. Truitt came down the court with only a few seconds remaining and hit a 20-footer as Carolina quickly called time out with one second left. All it took from here was a long lob by Dantley to ice the victory for the Irish. Dantley's lob was intercepted by Mathias and Carolina's reserve center put up a desperation shot that went wide of the basket and the game ended a 66-65 heart-breaking loss for the Gamecocks. le! 0,000 collection \ND-MAD[ INDIAN JEWELRY OFF THRU SATURDAY collection of silver and ?cklaces, bracelets, rings ~.
