Carolina's swim team won 11 of
13 events, including the first six of
the meet, to defeat Clemson 83-30
Monday at the Furman Pool.
Freshman Randy Phipps was
voted Gamecock of the Meet for his
victories in the 500 and 1000-yard
freestyle. The victory gives the
Gamecocks a 6-2 record going into
this Saturday's meet with Auburn.
"Auburn is tough," said Carolina
coach Alan Gentry. "Dealing with
Auburn is like dealing with the tar
baby-you think you have it and
instead it has you," he said.
Auburn finished 17th in the
NCAA last year and is expected to
given Tennessee and Alabama a
battle for the Southeastern Con
ference title.
"We think we can win it but they
have seven points on us because of
the medley relay; their times all

The Gamecocks dropped a 29-23
decision in Tiger Country last
Friday, cippled by forfeits in the
118 and 126 pound divisions.
Carolina's Ike Houck, in the -177
category, continued his role as Mr.
Steady, easily breezing past his
man. Also racking up pins were
Phil McKee (134) and John Faust
(167).
The Gamecocks also traveled to
Pembroke State on Saturday
where they finsihed fourth in a
field of 10 at the invitational,
placing in seven classes. Houck
once again blitzed to the top in the
177. David Terry (158) was
especially impressive as, despite
an injury, he fought to a fourth
place spot.
