The Carolina Chicks recorded
their 13th victory of the season by
defeating the defending National
Junior College Champions, An
derson, Tuesday night, 80-63, in the
Carolina Coliseum.
The game was tied with. only
three minutes gone in the second
half 38-38, when the Chicks sud
denly came to life.
Denise Naney fighting hard on
the boards, banged in a short
jumper after an offensive rebound.
Naney quickly followed with *a
jumpshot from the corner,
followed by a layup from Mott
Suber, two more baskets by Naney,
and a jumpshot from Charlene
Dubose as the Chicks ran off 10
unanswered points.
Head coach Pam Backus said,
"Offensively we were much better
because we fed the ball into the
middle. This had been giving us a
lot of trouble up until the UNCG
game. I think our team has finally
arrived." .
Led by Dubose sure ballhandling
and accurate passing, the Chicks
stretched their lead to 20 poihnts,
the largest of the night. From that
time, Anders6n could only cut the
lead to 12 points as Carolina held
off their rally.
Terry Woods was the only
substitute of the night as she
replaced Dubose who picked up her
fourth foul earlyin the second half.
Backus said, "I didn't substitute
more often because it takes three
minutes for a player to warm up.
If I pulled a starter just as she was
getting into the flow of the game,
Anderson might have jumped on
us. You can't beat them if you let
them get on top."
Carolina never trailed in the
game as they ran off the first eight
points. Anderson with 6-3 Susan
Neal, found it difficult to work the
ball into the middle and were

forced to take long jump shots out
of their range. After the Chicks
had built a 12 point lead, Anderson
called for a -time out to change
their strategy.
They came out in a full court
press which caused the Chicks
some trouble and led to numerous
turnovers.
Backus said, "Their press
bothered us. We relaxed for a
while and then we started throwing
our passes away." Carolina went
into the locker room at the end of
the first half leading 37-32.

Coliseum this year, the Chicks
were exposed before a much larger
audience than they had been used
to seeing at their home games.
Judging from the expressions and
comments of a few members of the
St Louis basketball team and in
terested fans, the girls put on an
entertaining performance which
surprised many a doubtful person.
Many people watching for the first
time didn't realize the amount of
talent which the girls' team
possess.
Carolina will play in the Elon
tournament on Friday night.
