Davis is interested in starting a honors college. Such a program, he said, would not only attract better students but also retain the good ones. "85 per cent of South Carolina Merit Finalists go out of state. This is an indictment to the quality of education in the state," Davis said. However, things are getting better at USC and, according to Davis, the university is im proving it reputation. Still, there are a few problem spots. Theatre dept. begins season The USC theatre department will begin its spring season with William Inge's "Bus Stop." The production, to be given Feb. 12-15, will be staged in the recently remodeled Drayton Hall theatre. The remodeling of the theatre included construction of a new box office, painting the theater and lobby, making lighting im provements, and installing new seats, carpeting and a front drape. Dr. James Patterson, a theatre professor, said the seating has been changed to eliminate the center aisle and add space between the rows. The seating capacity is now 400. "The Real Inspector Hound," by Tom Stoppard, will be presented in the theatre March 10-13 and William Shakespeare's "Love's Labor's Lost," to be staged April 23-26, will conclude the season. He was satisfied, though, with efforts being made to advise and inform students. "Our ad visement system and University 101 are steps in the right direc tion," Davis said. Some teachers enjoy introducing students to the field of their interest, he said. Davis is pleased these teachers strive to make their subjects relevant to students. 'Ow. 0 iat Davis misses the intellectual contact with students. "I miss time to sit down and work on an idea in psychology and then to sit down and share it with the students," he said. Davis is sorry he is not teaching in his special field, marital and personal relationships, especially when it is being given serious attention by psychologists. However, he was hopeful he would be teaching again within the next 18 months.
