R 5 L J S II AN WRKBOT E ggAC VY' e* Chicks in last BY GLENN SAWICKI Of The Gamecock staff The Carolina Chicks dropped a close 49-48 decision to South Carolina State on a 30- foot desperation shot Thursday night at the Booker T. Washington gym. South Carolina State pulled to within 1 point, 46-45, with 3:34 left in the game. Two minutes later, State grabbed the lead 47-46. Carolina had numerous chances to score, but couldn't do so until Mott Suber drove the lane with 20 seconds remaining to put the Chicks ahead 48-47. State took the inbounds pass, worked the ball, and was forced into a jump ball at mid court with 7 seconds remaining. All looked good for the Chicks as the tip headed for the right sideline, but a deter mined State player saved the ball from going out of bounds by hitting Jane Butler with the pass 30 feet from the hoop. Butler then launched her desperation shot and scored her only basket of the night. The game started slow as Carolina sank the first basket of the game on a jumper by Charlene Dubose. Both teams battled evenly, and with 13:22 to go in the first half, State took a 6-4 lead. The Chicks called for a time out to regroup, and then Carolina came out hustling on Swimmer, in Floridj BY GEORGE MORRIS Of The Gamecock staff Carolina's swimming team battled 7th ranked Miami down to the final events before succumbing to the Hurricanes 64-49 Saturday at the Miami Pool. A capacity crowd saw the Gamecocks grab a seven point lead after nine events before Miami made a comeback in the final stages of the meet. The loss was the first of the season for Carolina, whose record is now 2-1. Earlier in the week the Gamecocks thrashed South Florida 89-22, winning 12 out of 13 events. The tired, old cliche "closer than the score indicated" was rarely more appropriate than it was in this meet. Carolina trailed byondy one point going into the final two events after having led a great deal of the meet. "It's pretty tough to upset thne seventh best team in the country," said USC coach AMan Gentry, "but they were lucky to get out of there alive. We were setting pool and school records and they were, too. T'hey had to do it to win. This had to be one of the most exciting meets in the Southeast this yea. We swam as well as we. could possibly swim." The score was tied twice and the lead changed hands three times 3efore Miami finally jumped ihead for good, 49-48, when AMl America David Wilkie finished ~irst in the 200-yard breaststroke. hYilkie a former American record upset second defense led by Dubose, and on offense by Denise Naney. The game was tied three times as State managed to stay close on the strength of their inside game led by 6-1 Sue McGriff, and 6-2 Esther Hightower who controlled both the offensive and defensive boards. With 3 minutes to go in the half, the Chicks put on a surge which saw Sissy Jones and Dubose making twisting drives for layups to carry Carolina into a 2 point halftime lead. South Carolina State came out firing in the second half, scoring the first two baskets. The Chicks were cold and 3:30 passed before Dubose broke the ice. The fouls started to mount on both sides and this allowed the Chicks a chance to gain some control. With 14:25 left in the game, Carolina pulled ahead by 3 points on the aid of a jumper from Naney and one of two technical fouls called on State. A few minutes later, the Chicks had stretched their lead to 7 points, their longest of the night. From that point on, it was all downhill for Carolina. On Friday night, the Chicks traveled to Appalachian State for two games. They won the first game 55-53, and took the second 63-32. The Chicks record now stands at 9-3. Their next game is tonight, at 7:00 on the Booker T. Washington court. s split Et meets holder in the event set a pool record in the process. The Hurricanes put the meet out of reach in the next to last event, finishing 1-2 in the three meter diving. A final victory by Miami in the 400-yard freestyle relay made the final score deceptive. Several individuals records were set in the meet by the Gamecocks. Casey Claflin set a pool record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.0 seconds. This time qualifies him for the NCAA championships this year and is a USC senior record as well. Tom Jacobson set a school record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.61. Claflin, Jacobson, and Chip Newmn, who won the 50- and 100 yard freestyle, were voted Gamecocks of the meet. Three class records also fell in the meet. All-America Tom Sch midt set two junior records in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle, and Fred Ehmke set a sophomore record in the 200-yard butterfly. "I was well pleased with the guys, It was a successful trip frm the morale aspect of the players and was a success from the standpoint of the recognition we get from the performance,"~ Gentry said. This week Carolina travels to Furman for a Tuesday meet and will hold the first home meets of the season this weekend. The Gamecocks face Georgia Southern at 4:00 Friday and take on 10th ranked Florida at 2:00 atuay
