Sports Editor Led by the second half per formances of Tom Boswell and Mike Dunleavy, the Gamecocks broke open what looked like it would be a close game and ran away with a 85-68 victory over the Davidson Wildcats. The efforts of Boswell and Dunleavy woke the Gamecocks from their first half slumber. Boswell's excellent outside shooting and Dunleavy's numerous driving lay-ups broke the back of a tough Davidson team who trailed by five at the half, 36-31. Coach Frank McGuire said after the game, "In the second half we wanted to slow it up, be patient, and get it to Tommy (Boswell)." Carolina did manage to get it to Boswell who was 10-13 on the night and high scorer for the game with 22 points. In the second half Team eff Carolina BY BILLY BAKER Of The Gamecock staff Frank McGuire searched for the winning combination Saturday night against Davidson, a search that he hopes will land USC two big goals: a NCAA post season berth and 20 wins. "At this time in other seasons I could count on maybe eight guys to carry the team but with this team everyone has a part," McGuire said after USC's 85-68 win. Eleven players saw fiist half action against the Wildcats, highly unusual considering Carolina led by only five (36-31) at halftime. The guard position was the most freely substituted as Mike Dunleavy was paired with fresh man Jackie Gilloon, senior Jimmy Walsh, sophomore Stu Klitenic, and freshman Billy Truitt at various times in the first half. Although the win was a real team effort two Gamecocks "stood out" before the capacity crowd at the Carolina Coliseum. Tom Boswell, 6-9, junIor transfer and co-captain Mike Dunleavy were Impressive in Carolina's ninth win against four setbacks. Boswell played as if he was putting in a reference for All America honors as he hit 10 of 13 shots from the floor and added two foul shots for a game high of 22 points. "I am used to shooting on the move, he said after the big win. "The big men were taught to handle the ball where I went to high school (Birmingham, AMa.) and I learned to dribble there." More impressive than the sheer accuracy of his shots was the fact that he shot well while triple teamed and from every angle on te court. Using the glass ef fectively, Boswell banked most of his shots. "It is easier for me to shoot from the key than down low where everything Is so crowded," said Boswell. "I really didn't think the shots I made were too difficult." Mike Dunleavy went to the basket as well as he ever has in the a-secozt tops W] Boswell hit seven of eight shots. Carolina was impressive in the second half as they shot a torrid 62.9 per cent from the floor. Freshman Jack Gilloon suffered through a bad night in which he was 1-8 from the floor with five turnovers in 19 minutes of playing time. When McGuire saw that Gilloon wasn't producing he tried different players to find the right combination. McGuire used every guard he had an at one point moved Davis to the guard spot.' McGuire said, "I have tried more things with this ball club than I have in all my years of coaching with other teams. "All 12 Carolina players played with ten getting into the *coring column. The Gamecocks second half offense came in spurts of in dividual performances. In a three minute period early in the second half of play Boswell hit on four ort keys victory win. When reminded that Davidson beat St. Johns earlier in the season Dunleavy said, "It just happened that we didn't play well against St. Johns. (Carolina lost 78-77.) They played very well. And against Marquette we simply played terrible." "In the second half we moved the ball around their zone better," Dunleavy said. "Our shot selection was much better." USC lost to Davidson last year, 70-59, and Dunleavy said that he still remembered that game well. "We had a pretty tough time at Davidson last year. We certainly didn't want that to happen again tonight." Although the Gamecocks have as much talent as ever it is still in the developing stages as Dunleavy pointed out. "It takes about half a season for everyone to start playing well together," he said. "Jackie (Gilloon) is just a fresh man and, in reality, Boswell is new, even though he practiced with us last year."~ Dunleavy took a lot of hard licks in the Davidson game. "When you get knocked down you just have to learn to get up and not let it bother you. When most teams would have folded with this kind of shooting the Wildcats remained in the game as guards Gregg Dunn and Jay Powell were impressive. Powell tallied 19 on the night while Dunn was right behind with 18. With 11:25 remaining in the game the Gamecocks took com mand. Dunleavy hit on two layups and a baseline jumper to move the Gamecocks out in front by 17 60-43, with ten minutes remaining. Nate Davis then hit three con secutive 15-foot jumpers to boost the Gamecock advantage to 73-53. With less than three minutes remaining Lavis receiv.*d a technical foul for dunking the ball and the Gamecocks reserves maintianed the margin of victory. The game ended as Billy Truitt hit on a 27 foot jumper at the buzzer. Dunleavy followed Boswell with 18, Davis had 16, and Alex English had 12, giving the Gamecocks four men in double figures. Carolina's Boswell and English and the Wildcats Larry Horowitz were high men in the rebounding category as they all pulled down eight rebounds apiece.
