DEBA BY TERRY FEHELEY Of The Gamecock staff The USC debating team offers students an opportunity to examine and research problems and to present their findings under competition pressure. The debating team. is a product of the departments of English, theatre and speech, but attracts members from all parts of the University. During registration recently the team set up tables in front of the Coliseum to interest prospective members. On attending team meetings many new mem bers enjoyed the Inquiring at mosphere and the intense interest placed on good public speaking. The team coach, Thorne Comp .ton, an English professor at U.S.C., is very confident of the team's ability and considers this year to be one of the most successful in its history. The debating team consists -of a varisty squad and a novice squad. The Varsity members of the team have over two semesters ex perience and have already proven themselves. The novice squad consists of members who have under two semesters experience ore respo gave is that some senators who were elected by a narrow margin tended not to feel much responsibility. "These people are a burden to their constituents as well as to their government," Lawhead said. He noted that this has been a strenous year and only the most dedicated stuck with it. Another reason for the vacancies, . according to Lawhead, is the strict en forcement of the absentee rules. Lawhead explained that this is for the students protection-to make sure' they. receive representation. Kilgo explained that a recently passed law allows a larger senate. He said it would take time for people to get adjusted to the expansion. The law, ac cording to Kilgo, was to get the idea across that the senate is representative. Kilgo continued by saying most of the senators who were elected are still in the senate. The senators appointed to fill vacancies comprised the bulk of those who left, Kilgo said. At Wednesday's senate meeting, Tommy Efland, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said, "We're down to the core of people right now." The tournaments season runs from, approximately October 1 through May 1 -although many team members begin their research during the summer months before school even begins. Debating teams are governed by a nationwide association, the Forensic association, which provides tournament rulings and establishes topics which are to be debated during the year. During a debate, each team member is allowed 10 minutes tin which to express his view and to provide facts which support his opinion. During the fall semester, the team entered major tournaments at Emory University, UNC Wilmington, Wake Forest and Johns Hopkins University. The U.S.C. team hosted it's own tournament early in December and schools from all over the country participated. Coach Thorne Compton feels his team can compete with any team in the nation.
