The USC debating team offers
students an opportunity to
examine and research problems
and to present their findings
under competition pressure.
The debating team. is a product
of the departments of English,
theatre and speech, but attracts
members from all parts of the
University. During registration
recently the team set up tables in
front of the Coliseum to interest
prospective members.
Many members of the debating
team said they first became aware
of it through signs and posters on

The team coach, Thorne Comp

is very confident of the team's
ability and considers this year to
be one of the most successful in its
history.
The debating team consists -of a
varisty squad and a novice squad.
The Varsity members of the team
have over two semesters ex

themselves. The novice squad

gave is that some senators who
were elected by a narrow margin
tended not to feel much
responsibility. "These people are
a burden to their constituents as
well as to their government,"
Lawhead said. He noted that this
has been a strenous year and only
the most dedicated stuck with it.
Another reason for the
vacancies, . according to
Lawhead, is the strict en
forcement of the absentee rules.
Lawhead explained that this is
for the students protection-to
make sure' they. receive
representation.
Kilgo explained that a recently
passed law allows a larger
senate. He said it would take
time for people to get adjusted to
the expansion. The law, ac
cording to Kilgo, was to get the
idea across that the senate is
representative.
Kilgo continued by saying most
of the senators who were elected
are still in the senate. The
senators appointed to fill
vacancies comprised the bulk of
those who left, Kilgo said.
At Wednesday's senate
meeting, Tommy Efland,
chairman of the Senate Judiciary
Committee, said, "We're down to
the core of people right now." He

The tournaments season runs
from, approximately October 1
through May 1 -although many
team members begin their
research during the summer
months before school even begins.
Debating teams are governed by a
nationwide association, the
Forensic association, which
provides tournament rulings and
establishes topics which are to be
debated during the year.
During a debate, each team
member is allowed 10 minutes tin
which to express his view and to
provide facts which support his
opinion. A panel of judges then

So far this year the team is doing
extremely well. The team has
participated in several tour

prizes to the trophy case in the
Humanities building. Varsity
team members Bob Coble, and Top

the first four tournaments they
