"The senate this year has tried its best to change SGA to represent student desires," Lawhead says. He notes that "the Student Senate is the only elected body with responsibility." The students must elect responsible people, said Lawhead, and the senators must be responsible to their constituents if SGA is to work well. Other senate accomplishments last semester included the establishment of a permanent book exchange, the removal of SGA from the South Carolina State Student Legislature-which has been termed by various SGA officials as a waste--an emergency ad hoc residence life committee, and the decision on the ticket distribution bill-which Lawhead says is an example of the senate helping the students. In last Thursday's Gamecock an article said SGA President Leigh Leventis wanted a survey of students' opinions taken. A survey has already been taken by the communications committee. Leventis said he wants SGA to get the results of the survey. Four thousand questionnaires were given to students, and recent reports indicate as many as 3,800 have been returned. Stuart said the survey was needed because the senate must know what the students want before it can act. Kilgo said he believes the survey will to some extent be helpful. However some of the questions were rather vague, he said, adding that in this type of survey, yes-no-maybe answers would be best. Lawhead says, "The survey will give us an idea of what the students want the senate to do." At a committee meeting held January 14, Smith emphasized the necessity of handling the applications quickly and with no abstentions. "We expect to start interviewing the potential candidates around March," Smith said. After interviewing the candidates, he said, the committee will recommend to the Provost a person or persons it feels are qualified for the office. "Our committee is strictly advisory," he added.
