Davis as provost, the chief academic officer of USC, was announced Dec. 19, by President William H. Patterson. Davis has been acting provost since March 1974, when he was selected to replace Patterson, who replaced Thomas Jones as president of USC. In announcing the appointment, Patterson said, "Keith Davis has indicated in the past nine months his capacity for giving Carolina outstanding academic leadership. I look forward to working with him in the years ahead as the University strives for academic soundness and excellence in all endeavors." The appointment of - Davis concludes the work of the provost search committee, headed by Robert Patterson, professor of history. The committee recom mended three people, including Davis, to Patterson for con sideration for the office. The committee, which began work in March, considered some 302 candidates for provost. "The committee sought two main qualities from its candidates," Patterson said. "First we wanted an individual who had made a reputation in his field," he said, "and then we were interested in people who had extensive ad ministrative backgrounds." Davis, 38, is a native of North Carolina with a bachelor's and a Ph.D. degree in psychology from Duke University. He came to USC in August 1973 to be associate DR. KEITH E. As a result of the action Frank McGuire, head basketball coach, Jim Carlen, new football coach, have become associate director of athletics. Paul Dietzel, former head football coach and athletic director, was offered the new position as vice president of University Relations. The decision by the ioard also brought about the resignation of Ralph Floyd, Dietzel's assistant director of athletics. T. Eston Marchant, chairman of the Board of Trustees, told newsmen of the change on Dec. 13. "The first announcement I have to make is that Frank McGuire, head basketball coach will be assigned additional duties and have the additional title of associate director of athletics," said Marchant. "Coach McGuire will report in this capacity directly to the president (William H. Patterson)." Marchant then announced the new head football coach. "Coach Jim Carlen has today accepted the Universities offer to become associate director of athletics and head football coach effective Dec. 28."
