Full-time students, taking 12 hours or more, with dependents will receive $270. Students with on dependent will get $321 and with two dependents the will get $366 a month. A student with more than tw -dependents will receive $22 more dollars a month. three-quarter student will receive $203, with on dependent $240 and with two dependents $275 a month. veteran with more than two dependents will receive additional $17 a month. Half-time students, with s* hours, will receive $135 a. month with no dependents $160 for one dependent and $182 for two dependents. Veterans with more than two dependents will receive additional $11 a month. The long awaited increase was vetoed by Presiden Gerald Ford but was overridden by Congress on Dec. 4., The increased vet payments are retroactive to Sept. 1, 1974. VA officials said the back payments will be in the hands of those vets now in school, whose status 1' current and up to date by Sept. 15. Udless, they said, checks are delayed by seasonal mail. First regular checks carrying the new increase will go out Jan. 1. The new GI Bill also calls for an increase in benefit time from 36 to 45 months and a $600 a year oa program. Ford objected to the 45-month entitlement, stating 36 months was ample time to complete undergraduate study. According to Bob Thurber, coordinator of veteran student affairs at USC, the rational behind the 45 month increase was that most vets found it hard to step into the academic environment right out of the service and carry a full load. Because of adjustment problems vets usually end up dropping hours, but are still credited with the full-time benefits, he said. The extra benefit entitlement will help vets who in variably come up short of degree hours with benefits gone, Thurber said.
