Mungo gives
Columbia land developer Michael J. Mungo an
nounced Wednesday he is giving 17 acres of land in
Columbia to benefit the endowment of the USC
Educational Foun dation.
The land, a part of the old Columbia Country Club
property adjoining the city in the Eau Claire sec
tiori, is being given in memory of Dr. John B. Mc
Conaughy, long-time political science professor at
USC who died in 1972.
Mungo, a member of the USC Board of Trustees
and a 1950 political science graduate of Carolina,
said he was honoring McConaughy's memory with
the gift because of what the professor "meant to
him as a teacher and friend."
The gift was announced at a luncheon Wednesday
at Coldstream Country Club hosted by Mr. and Mrs.

Johnsonville and USC officials. Paul A. Sansbury of
Darlington, president of the Educational Foun
dation, accepted the gift for the Foundation and
thanked Mungo for his continuing support of
University endeavors and "particularly for his gifts
which mean so much to the future enrichment of
the academic programs at Carolina."
McConaughy joined the Carolina faculty in 1944
and taught there until his death. He earned
bachelor's and master's degrees at the University
of Alabama and the Ph. D. at the University of
Chicago and studied at the University of London and
the University of Paris.
He was first president of the South Carolina
Political Science Association.
