NORMAN, Okla.-Jackie Gilloon
finished as Carolina's high scorer
despite not starting and missing
almost the first five minutes of
USC's bout with Oklahoma.
But, Gilloon, who pumped in 16
points, was far from satisfied with
his team leading performance.
"I am not too satisfied," the
freshman from W. New York, N.J.,
said after the Gamecock's 90-84
loss. "I had a bunch of turnovers
and I let my man score a lot of lay
ups."
Gilloon's total of four turqovers
did not lead the team as starters
Mike Dunleavy and Tom Boswell
also committed that many.
Gilloon's self-criticism of his
defense also seemed much too
strong as neither Oklahoma guards
scored an overly impressive total
of points, Mike McCurdy scoring 17
and Eddie Fields just eight.
GiHoon split defensive coverage of
both with USC's other two guards,
Jimmy Walsh and Dunleavy.
Walsh started the game, but
when USC fell behind by two
points, 8-6, 'Frank McGuire sent
Gilloon in to spark the offense,
which had been sluggish the first
two minutes.
With 15:23 remaining in the half,
Gilloon entered the game after
sitting at the scorer's table for
more than a minute.

Walsh, who started his second

a senior, saw the reasoning behind
the replacement. "Coach wanted
to try to get something started. I
am a pattern player but he's
(Gilloon) a good guy to bring in off
the bench. He's got a lot of good
moves and he can spark an of
fense."
Gilloon did not spark USC's
offense when he first entered,
however. The freshmaa missed his
first five shots, running his season
opening total to 12 before sinking
his first basket of the year. Once
he got started, however, he was
sensational.
Hitting six of his last seven shots,
Gilloon finished with a seven-for-13
shooting night. Those seven field
goals and two-of-two free throws
(for a perfect four-of-four. season
mark), tallied his 16 points.
After the game he was his only
real critic. McGuire, although he
blamed the loss at least partially
on the play of the team's guards,
had praise for Gilloon.
"We saw some good things
tonight. Gilloon may have found
himself as a shooter," McGuire
said.
The 25 year collegiate head
coach did see some faults in
Gilloon's performance. McGuire
