Auditorium, corner of Green
and Pickens Streets. The
-event isopen to the public.
A native of Washington,
Boston has a degree in
photographic technology and
illustration from Rochester
Institute of Technology. He
was a free lance photogarpher
before joining the Dayton
(Ohio) Daily News in.1965. He
has been with the Washington
Star-News since 1967.

A commuter-etudent oppionnaire
has been mailed to 750 commuter
students in hopes of obtaining some
idea of how the University could
better serve commuting students.
"The purpose of the survey is to
find out what the commuters are
wanting," Julianne Thrift,
assistance dean of residence life
and head of the commuter student
survey said.
Of the 750 opinionnaires sent out,
about 250 have been returned.
Thrift said she was hoping for a 50
per cent response but as yet only 35
per cent have been returned.
Commuters generally feel left
out when things are planned at the
University, according to Thrift.
A similar survey conducted two
years ago showed 80 per cent of the
day students left the campus after
3 p.m. and did not return until the
next day. Of the 20,000 students
enrolled at USC, 14,000 or 70 per
cent are commuter students. The
programs that the University
sponsors at night then are only for
a minority of the enrolled students.
Thrift said, "Many students are
asking for better com
munications." The major problem
is how to reach the commuter, she
said. The questionnaire asked how
day students got news of campus
events. - The Gamecock, The
Russell House bulletin board and
various other bulletin boards were
given as responses.
Thrift felt the results of this
survey would be similar to the
results of a survey done two years
ago.
The opinionnaires received so
far show day students want more
lounges with free telephones to

make local calls, more lockers and
more on-campus mailboxes. The
opinionnaire also asks what other
things concern day students the
most. The overwhelming response
to this question was a request for
more parking spaces. Students
feel it is very important for the
University to aid-in transportation
and parking problems.
Commuter students and faculty
will lose 771 parking spaces next
semester because of new con
struction on campus. Tentative
plans are being made to estoblish
some type of shuttle-bus tran
sportation. These plans may be
impending when 771 parking
places are taken away.

and that more things could be done
in the near future to help the
commuter students obtain a better
relationship with University
sponsored programs.
