Engis. Alex English BY JAMES P. HERSH Asst. Sports Editor Carolina's frontcourt will probably determine what degree of success the team will have this season. Two of the key players are Tom Boswell, a transfer from South Carolina State, and Alexander English, a junior who is a co captain of the team. A slender 6-8 forward, English has been a two-year starter for the Gamecocks since he graduated from Dreher High School in 1972. Early in his career many people questioned whether English would be able to survive the rough play beneath the backboards, but as a freshman he answered those questions by not only competing evenly, but excelling at getting rebounds. Nate Davis Women to play Coliseum games Two USC basketball games will be preceded . by games of the Carolina's women's team this season. On Jan. 28, the Chicks will meet Anderson in the Cqlieen, also at. 5:5.- On Feb. 12 -the Chicks face the College of Chriesten In the coliseum, also at 6:4. The games are jut two of the Chicks' 14-game regular season and five-tournament schedule. Other home games are played in the Physical Education Center. Last year English was the dominant PlOyer in the USC frontCoUrt, Avtg&fg 18.3 points pergame and . rebounds. ThroUghot his-two-year, career English has been a steady per former, and now he is considered one of the players Frank McGuire can depend on to turn in an ex cellent performance game-after game. While English can be counted on -toply wllconsistently, Boswell has toecalle a question mark if only because he has yet to be seen in actual comtition. However, if he lives up to hi preseason billing Boswell will be considered for All America teams before the end of the season. Boswell averaged 24 points and 17 rebounds per game two years ago at South Carolina State. Classified as a junior Boswell came to Carolina when bis South Carolina State coach, Ben Jobe, took an assistant Icoach's job at USC. A native of Montgomery, Ala., Boswell impressed some professional scouts without even layin last year, and he was a e in the third round of the American Basketball Association draft last spring by the New York Nets. However, like Boswell, E ish spurned the pros' offer to retrn to Carolina. .Boswell replaces last. year's starter, Bob Mathias, at center. While Mathias, now a junior, did a commendable job last season with an 8.9 scoring and 9.7 rebounding average, Boswell is bigger by two inches, 6-9 to 6-7, and h additional size should make the Gamecocks stronger on the backboards.
