Holtz best bet
After weeks of speculation during which dozens of
names have been mentioned as possibilities as
Carolina's next head football coach, Lou Holtz has
emerged as perhaps the best bet to obtain the job; or, at
least, the most sought-after candidate.
The very nature of Holtz' comments made in the
Charlotte Observer on Monday and quotes made by
USC's chairman of the Board of Trustees in a State story
on Tuesday, indicate that Holtz is considering the
possibility of coming to Carolina and that Carolina
would welcome him if he decides to come.
Following North Carolina State's victory over Arizona
State Saturday night, Holtz was questioned by reporters
about his interest in the job as Paul Dietzel's
replacement. His answers definitely did not indicate a
disinterest.
According to the Observer, Holtz ansered the question
"Is it true that a deal is signed and sealed for you to
succeed Paul Dietzel as football coach at South
Carolina?" with "I haven't signed anything yet."
Also, "Well, will you be at N.C. State next season?"
with "I can't make any comment on that right now."
Those answers are hardly denials of the rumor which
caused them to be asked. It would appear that if Holtz
isn't already set on coming to USC, he is at least willing
to listen to offers.
The State quoted USC Trustee T. Eston Marchant as
saying Holtz is on the University's prefered list of
candidates for coach. Also, that with State's per
mission, Holtz would be contacted this week.
USC has not set its bignts on Holtz and -1Lz alone;
indeed, one member of USC's search cJmmittee has just
completed an interview with Texa'.i Tech's Jim Carlin.
And the other prospective coaches who applied for the
job are still being considered--like Dan Reeves and
Mooney Player.
But Holtz definitely does appear to have the inside
track to the job. It would seem all it would require to
lure him from Raleigh would be an attractive enough
offer because he seems to be listening and interested.
Holtz doesn't have to sell himself to anyone--his record
does that for him. In three seasons at North Caroling
State he has compiled a 24-8-1 record and two postseason
bowl wins.
Carolina would seem capable of selling itself to any
coach--the University has excellent athletic facilities, a
large athletic budget, tremendous alumni support and
an attractive salary for the coach, to offer.
Would Holtz leave North Carolina State? He's already
coached at six different schools, in an assistant or head
coach capacity.
