Mungo said the main problem in the selection was the slow pace being set by the selection com mittee appointed ,to make recommendations to the board about filling the position. "There are coaches in the top ten who are willing to negotiate today so there is no excuse for not having a coach by Dec. 1 We're only hiring a football coach,riot electing a governor," Mungo 'continued, "The whole USC procedure is too damn slow." He recalled talking to "several" coaches whose teams are going to bowl games, who called him ex pressing an interest in the USC head coaching position. Mungo declined to name the men but said it is "inexcusable not to have a coach by Dec. 1." The Columbia realtor said he particularly disagreed with the manner in which the prospects for the coaching job are being in terviewed. He said the purpose of the Board's Athletic Committee is to handle such matters and this decision would ultimately be left up to it. "When you have a committee to do that and who have to work with him (the head coach) and you appoint another committee for the same purpose, you're working on a self-defeating system. I am decidedly of the opinion they (the Board) have too many committees which are formed to include everybody in the choice of a coach," Mungo said. He explained that no matter the selection by the search committee the final decision would be made by the entire Board, thus possibly an nulling any action by the search committee. Another fault Mungo cited with the present search method is the loss of valuable recruiting time. Mungo said this is another major reason why a new coach should be hired by December .
