Saturday and Sunday will be a
super soccer weekend for everyone
who wants to play or learn more
about soccer.
On Saturday 20 youth teams
representing the Columbia YMCA
Soccer League, Charlotte,
Statesville, Raleigh and Rock Hill
will play. There will be games in
all age divisions from ages 7-15,
either at Memorial Stadium or the
State Fairgrounds, depending
where high school football ill be
played.
On Sunday Carolina will put its
11-4-1 record on the line against the
high-scoring Columbia Soccer
Club, which has a 6-1 record. The
game is set for 2 p.m. at the
Carolina Soccer Field at Whaley
and Sumter Streets.
Boys 7-15 may pre-register for
the Columbia YMCA Spring Soccer
League at either the Saturday
games or at the Carolina-Columbia
game Sunday.
The Sunday game will be
narrated and explained by Jack
Williams, ~ president of the
Columbia YMCA Soccer League, to
help the public learn more about
the fundamentals of soccer.
The game will match John
Rosier, Carolina's high-scoring
All-America candidate, against
Columbia's Riener Kronenfeld.
Rosier, with 27 goals this season,
ranks among the nation's leading

margin in seven games.
Two Carolina coaches, Yank
Albers and Dick Fernald will be
playing against the team they
coached all season, playing
midfield for the Columbia team.
Also playing will be the city's
oldest player, Bill Lauritzen,
founder of the Columbia team, who
is 52.
On hand for the game will be
local radio, television, and
newspaper personalities who have
contributed to the growth of soccer
in the state.
Carolina Soccer Club brings
some impressive statistics into the
showdown with Columbia.
First year coach Albers'
Gamecocks have outscored their
opponents by a 2:1 ratio. Carolina
scored 61 goals to their opponents
28 and outshot their opponents 415
198.
Rosier led the team in individual
statistics for the second year with
27 goals and 9 assists for 36 points.
He was followed by Tal Albertson
with 12goals and four assistsfor 16
points. Also contributing to the
offense were Howard Crossan, 6
goals 3 assists; Tim Hankinson 2
goals, 7 assists; and Ken McCord 7
goals, 3 assists.

Skaflestad beat Beeland 6-1, 6-4
and earlier had beaten Joe Lucci of
Florida Technical 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the
quarter-finals. He was to meet
second-seeded Sam Vuille of
Florida in the finals.
