VERN SMITH
Veteran
newsman
visits USC
A reporter in the Atlanta
bureau of Newsweek
magazine, Vern Smith, will
speak 8 p.m. today in the
Belk Auditorium in the
Business Administration
building.
Smith's talk, sponsored
by the USC Department of
English and the Afro
American Studies
program, will center on his
work as a reporter and his
first novel, just recently
published, "The Jones
Men."
Having graduated from
San Francisco State in
1969, Smith worked for a
year and - half as a
reporter for the Long
Beach (Calif.) Independent
Press Telegram before
joining Newsweek in 1971.
Smith was first assigned
to the Detroit bureau of
Newsweek and while there
covered a wide range of
stories including the Kent
State University trials,
Detroit undercover police
action and the University
of Michigan marching
band. In 1972 his story on
"Detroit's Heroin Sub
culture" won a Detroit
Press Club Foundation
award for "distinguished
current events reporting."
Smith transferred to
Atlanta in 1973 and
traveled with the Atlanta
Brave slugger Hank Aaron
for three weeks in
preparation for a special
cover story on the baseball
standout.
His novel, "The Jones
Men," grew out of his in
timate awareness of
Detroit's underworld and
its black drug scene.
