This ye Basketball hopes ha Women.S B~Y BILLY BAKinW OfTheGameeek waff Seven veterans and a group of promising freshmen could make the goals of USC's women basketball team reachable this season. "Realistically, we feel we could place as high as number three in the Regionals," said second-year coach Pam Backhaus. "Honestly we are trying to be the third best team because if we play well enough to be number three, then we should be able to play well enough to be number one." In order to advance to the Regionals the Chicks would first have to win the state cham pionship. Last year they did, but like their male counterparts, found post-season play very em barrassing. The reigning State Champions have. several out Rtanding players back. Junior Charlene Dubose led the team in scoring last year with a 15.6 average and was selected to play on a U.S. women's team that played a Russian team this past summer, Martha Suber, a jurdlor, Is expected to add scoring depth to the team also. "I expect both of these girls to *average around 20 points a game," said Coach Backhaus. "Charlene has really Improved her speed." Cissle Jones, daughter of former USC President, Tom Jones, Is expected to start for the Chicks. ' She was a starter at Furman last year as a freshman. "Cissle has a real good shot and can play anyone one on one," said Backhaus. With Dubose, Suber and Jones providing-most of the scoring, the rebounding strength of the team appears to be In the hands of junior Denise Nanney and sophomore Evie Griffith. Freshman Maureen McCauley should play the point position and handle the ball han dlgduties most of the time-ac ~odnto Coach Backhaus. The gamne p lan is a it different this year. "We are going to try and stay out of the middle of a zone defense." said Backhaus. "We sort to starting require no gimmk offensive back- running back Ja, er, USC should terback as be did Igh i team see] hope to over load the defense and rely on quick passes for our scores." The Chicks will not run a post offense at all this season and Backhaus, would like the team to 61 run more. "We hope to get a lot of sots off of auick pss oroff1 toput It's easy.
