The bill passed by the USC
Student Senate Wednesday balting
funds for the teacher evaluation
project has been approved by SGA
President Leigh Leventis.
The bill, stated that all funds
($3,500 total) needed to complete
the evaluation project revert to the
SGA unallocated funds account.
This, of course, eliminates the
project for the semester.
"I'm signing It because it won't
do any good to veto it," said
Leventis. -
Leventis, an advocate of the
evaluation project, spoke to the
senate earlier this semester in
hopes of convincing them to con
tinue with the project. There has
been a lot of discussion and debate
pertaining to the project, and some
senators felt the project has taken
up too much of the senate's time.
The senators gave their reasons
for ending the project as not
fulfilling its objectives. This in
cluded the fact that the project was
not ready by the beginning of pre
registration, so many students
could not take advantage of it.

Several senators saw no purpose in
spending thousands of dollars on a
project which they thought was not
all it could have been. The senate
passed the bill, 25-12.
"We had a lot of faculty support
for this evaluation," Leventis
explained. He said the evaluation
would have had an effect on nearly
ever student because not everyone
-pre-registers and almost no one
pre-registers in all their courses.
In ,this respect, Leventis said, the
pro t would have been helpful.
Sinc a veto "won't do any
good," e laimned Leventis, there is
no point i vetoing the bill. His
rationale wa t was really too late
to try to do anything major to the
bill. He said if he'vetoed it and the

senate did not override the veto,
that would just be another delay to
the project; one which could
delay It past the planned com
pletion date.
Leventis commented, "If people
(senators) had put in as much time
trying to make it a success as they
did trying to destroy it, the
evaluation would have been very
useful." He maintained that the
evaluation was good as it was set
up. He remarked that a committee
effort 4vas needed for a good
evaluation; the committee being
omposed of senators and faculty
sembers.

funds were reverted to the
unallocated funds account, said
Leventis. They are troubled with
problems of getting enough money.
Leventis still thinks "there will be
a surplus"of monies in the budget,
and therefore the senators' con
ce-ns are not well-founded.
Gary Latimer proposed an
amendment to the bill that would
reve't $500 which had been ap
propriated to other Academic
Affairs projects to the SGA
unallocated funds account. This
would seriously dwindle the Office
of Academic Affairs' functioning
powers, since very few funds would
remain in their budget. Latimer
said since the evaluation project

concern, monies from their other

was defeated by the senate.
Leventis said he was "surprised
Gary.. came up with such an
amendment." If Latimer wanted
this done, Leventis said, he should
have made a separate bill.
Leventis is still very much for the
continuation of the Office of
Academic Affairs. l-e called
Latimer's suggestion p "totally
ridiculous amendment." Leventis
.added he would have vetoed the bill
if the amendment had been tacked
on.
As for an evaluation next
semester, Leventis gave a definite,
"There will not be one."
