Doubles fail tennis A doubles victory in the closing action of the USC fall Invitational Tennis Team Championship gave the Qamecocks the tournament's title for the second straight year. USC's Phil Dukes and Steve Geller, the third-seeded Carolina doubles duo, downed Clemson's Bobby McKee and Steve Brown in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. The win proved especially im portant minutes later when USC's first and second doubles com binations dropped their matches, and Carolina squeaked by the Tigers, 5-4. Caratina ended up 4-0 to take the title, while Presbyterian College surprisingly went 3-1 to finish runner-up. Clemson, last year's runner-up, could have forced a three-wgy tie for the title if it could have swept Sunday's doubles. action after trailing in sigles, 4-2. Furman finished fourth with a 1 3 slate while Jacksonville returned south winless and in last place. "I'm real pleased with the way everybody played," Coach Ron Smarr said after the tournament. Smarr was undaunted by his two top doubles teams losing their matches to Clemson since the decisive match finished prior to the two.losses. "Besides," Smarr said, "we didn't play bad in those two. They could have gone either way." USC was forced to play the decisive doubles matches less than one-half hour . after finishing singles play with Presbyterian. But ,while Smarr acknowledged this may have had an effect. in losing two of three doubles mat ches to Clemson, he said every team in the tournament had a rigorous schedule. But Carolina easily emerged as the class team in the event, ex periencing no difficulty with any team other than rival Clemson. Clemson also experienced little difficulty in disposing of Furman and Jacksonville, but was upset by Presbyterian, 6-3, in an unusual fashion. After the Tigers swept the doubles matches to lead 3-0, Presbyterian forged back with a sweep of singles action to dominate the scoring. Almost as much of a surprise as Presbyterian's strong showing was the weak performance by Jacksonville, who enjoyed a close match only with Furman. Although Presbyterian fell to Carolina by 7-2 score, one of those victories was most significant. Carolina's top man, Clyde Skaflestad went down in top singles action. Dukes and Geller enjoyed suc cess in their only other doubles action together in the tourney, beating a duo from Presbyterian in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6. Geller also teamed with Mark Rosenblum for a doubles win over Jacksonville. USC will see action again this weekend when the Gamecocks travel to Gainesville, Fla. for the Club 300 Championship tourney. Sports Editor Ravenel wants coaching job Charles D. "Pug" Ravenel is seeking Catolina's head football coaching job, The Gamecock has learned. Ravenel won the state's Democratic gubernatorial primary this summer, but was ruled ineligible to serve as governor by the state Supreme Court because he did not meet South Carolina's five-year residency requirement for governors. While in college at Harvard University in the late 1950s, Ravenel was a starting quarterback for three years. Although he has not been connected with football since college, Ravenel said his relative inexperience will not hurt him. "I didn't have any experience in politics before last year, and I managed to do aright against people who had been politicians for more than 20 years," RaveW. said. "I think I can do the same thing ai a football coach." Ravenel said he decided to seek the USC coaching job after "many days of soul-searching." Accor' to the former gubernatorial candidate, he began 'h'ig about the USC job shortly after the Supreme Court ruled against him. "When I came back to South Carolina I said I wanted to do something to help the state," Ravenel said. "The first thing that came to mind. was the State House because it has been in such a mess for so long. "I must say when the Supreme Court ruling came down I was crushed because I thought my chancto do something constructive for the state had been lost," Ravenel continued. "But then Carolina's football team got off to such a bad start and Paul Dietzel announced his retirement, and suddenly I realized there are other things that need fixed-up in this state other than the government." Ravenel said he thinks he will get the job, and he considers the position he is in now the same as at the beginning of his drive for the Democratic primary election. According to Ravenel, he will retain Marvin Chernoff as his campaign manager. "I realize that Mooney Player's campaign is way ahead of mine right now," Ravenel said, "but then again, wasn't Bryan Dorn's, too? I believe Player began his campaign too early, and he will burn out by the end of the campaign. "Sure he's a formidable candidate. How can you pass out that many bumper stickers and not be? But he's a lot like Dorn-long-time professionals in their field-and people are tired of people like that-in politics and out of it." Although Ravenel said he is still disappointed at not being able to serve as governor, he said the disqualification may have been a blessing in disguise. "As governor, what could I really do?" Ravenel asked. "I could probably have pushed a couple of minor laws through, but compared to what I can do as USC's football coach, what are a few laws that nobody really cares about?" Ravenel said he is still interested in a political career, and he said the Carolina coaching job could be a majo step in the U.S. Senate. "Just think if I come into the job and win 10 games next year, and then go undefeated and take the team to the Orange Bowl the next year," Ravenel said, "I could run against Strom Thurmond In 1978 and kill him. And in Cayce, disc jockey Ben Dekle, who co sponsored- the suit that disqualified Ravenel from serving as governor, said he plans to look into the Ravenel coaching candidacy.
